Frustrated Kiwis searching for answers

Captain Suzie Bates admits her New Zealand team have become serial under-performers at major women's cricket tournaments and hopes a review can find out why. 

A strong White Ferns failed to reach the semi-finals of a World Cup for the first time after a humiliating 186-run thrashing from India in Derby on Saturday.

New Zealand crumbled for a paltry 79 off 25.3 overs in response to 7-265, recording their lowest score in 11 editions of the tournament.

A jubilant India advance to the semi-finals, where they will face Australia.

The other semi pits hosts England against South Africa while New Zealand were marooned in fifth place out of eight teams.

Flush with player talent, the outcome represented another significant disappointment for a frustrated Bates.

The world class opener was left to reflect on just three group stage wins, all over lower-ranked opponents.

"We haven't been able to perform in the biggest matches and it's happened on a number of occasions," Bates said.

"We've worked on it as a group but there's talking about it and there's actually doing it.

"I can't answer why that's the case. We believe we have a team that can compete and win these tournaments. We turn up believing that but it's not to be again."

Despite being among the world's premier teams, New Zealand's lone World Cup triumph came in 2000, when they were hosts.

They haven't won any of the five editions of the World Twenty20 tournament while they blown early leads in the last two Rose Bowl series losses to Australia.

New Zealand will host the next World Cup in 2021.

Missed chances let the Indians off the hook on Saturday, allowing captain Mithali Raj to compile 109 - her sixth ODI century - while Veda Krishnamurthy smashed 70 from 45 balls at the death.

Offspinner Leigh Kasperek removed Raj in taking 3-45 off 10 overs while recalled seamer Hannah Rowe claimed a miserly 2-30 off her full complement.

They weren't supported by the rest of the attack with Bates (0-59 off 8 overs) and legspinner Amelia Kerr (0-64 off 10) both expensive.

Bates' dismissal off the seventh ball started a slide which they couldn't stop.

Amy Satterthwaite's 26 was the only score past 12 as the last seven wickets fell for 28 runs.

The Indian hero was classy left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad, whose 5-15 in relatively unhelpful conditions tore the heart out of New Zealand's response.
