Hurricanes land Bailey in new deal

Tasmania's favourite son sends message from freezing iceberg lake to confirm Hobart return

The Hobart Hurricanes hunt for overseas players has extended to Iceland.

Not really … that's just where Hobart star George Bailey was during his winter vacation when he confirmed he had signed on for a further two years.

"I'm currently in Iceland on the look-out for any overseas players," Bailey joked in his announcement video sent in from the country more known for glaciers and volcanoes than cover drives and yorkers.

"Not too many about here, but there are a couple of seals though ... not the singer."

Bailey appeared to be at Jökulsárlón, a popular lake in Iceland's south where icebergs float out to sea after breaking off from the nearby glacier. Despite it being the northern hemisphere summer, temperatures in Iceland were peaking at 6C.

The Tasmanian's return to adds further strength to an already impressive Hurricanes outfit that is led by star overseas recruits Kumar Sangakkara and Darren Sammy.

Having captained IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab in a disappointing campaign that saw them eliminated from playoff contention early, Bailey is currently holidaying in Europe before linking up with the Sussex Sharks in England's domestic T20 competition.

The World Cup winner's involvement in the Big Bash could again be limited by his international commitments, with a hectic 2015-16 summer schedule still being finalised by Cricket Australia.

"It's been a busy season and there is a lot to get through before the Hurricanes hit off, but the list is coming together nicely and I'm looking forward to being Hurricane again," Bailey said.

"Securing Kumar Sangakkara is huge for the 'Canes and with Darren Sammy also back on board and some great new signings, members and fans should expect some first-class entertainment.

"There is a fantastic vibe that surrounds the KFC T20 Big Bash League and I absolutely love putting on the Hurricanes shirt and playing in front of a packed home crowd."
