Bailey befuddled, JL's selection dilemma

Tigers and Warriors with contrasting problems after one-sided Shield clash ends early in Hobart

When it comes to finding a way forward for Tasmania's Sheffield Shield side, skipper George Bailey is stumped.

Reeling from a humiliating nine-wicket home ground loss to Western Australia on Sunday, Bailey was at a loss to analyse the issues keeping the Tigers at the bottom of the ladder.

Quick Single: Why SA denied Victoria a substitute

"Just disappointing I reckon," Bailey said of his side's performance after the match wrapped up more than a day early at Hobart's Blundstone Arena.

"You look at that scorecard and you look at that game, and if there is (any analysis) it's probably nothing that hasn't been said before.

"We all are scratching our heads a little bit."

Moody shines with Dukes for Warriors

The Tigers' batsmen were routed for 198 and 265, with the top order slipping to 2-2 and 2-12 respectively.

Only an admirable 75 from No.9 batsman Simon Milenko on Sunday forced Western Australia to bat a second time.

Milenko, you beauty for Tasmania

While Bailey noted Milenko's successful game plan, he said that overall there was very little positivity from Tasmania.

"There's a good break between now and the next game so perhaps not a bad time for individuals and the group to take stock and find a way to get better," he said.

While Australia T20 squad member Tim Paine made a century in Second XI cricket at the weekend, Bailey said a recall to the Tasmanian squad was out of his hands.

"I'm not a selector," he said. "From my point of view as the captain I just want us to pick the best players."

Tasmania next take on NSW at Wollongong from February 25.

Quick Single: Starc's whole new ball game in India

The Warriors meanwhile, face a difficult pace decision with Jason Behrendorff expected to be fit for the side's next Shield match.

A highlight of the win over the struggling Tigers was the discovery of debutant quick Cameron Green, who took first-innings 5-24 from 8.1 overs.

Green tears apart Tigers on debut

His figures are second only to Brad Williams' 6-74 in the summer of 1999-2000 when it comes to Warriors on debut, though Williams could point to previous Shield experience.

Green, 17, drew praise from coach Justin Langer but the emerging talent poses a pleasant problem for selectors.

"I'd be very surprised if he doesn't play next game," Langer said of Behrendorff, who has been absent since fracturing his leg during a Shield match in November.

Quick Single: Langer gives Green light to historic debut

"Joel Paris and Nathan Coulter-Nile probably still won't be available but when you've got young bowlers like Simon Mackin, David Moody and now Cameron Green, you need those senior bowlers around and we're looking forward to Jason coming back.

"He was our best bowler before the Big Bash and we're looking forward to seeing him back in action."

On the road: The tour starts now

Mackin finished with 4-57 and 1-48 in Hobart while Moody recorded 1-57 and an equal Shield career-best 4-45.

Seamers Andrew Tye and Hilton Cartwright also chipped in at Blundstone Arena, taking a wicket each in the Warriors' third successive Shield win.

"We didn't have the greatest start – for various reasons – to the season but we're certainly in the hunt now and that's where you want to be," Langer said.

"We've got to play (top-placed) Victoria twice, we've got two home games at the WACA so we're giving ourselves a chance."
