Maxwell posts speedy ton for Yorkshire

Australia allrounder saves Yorkshire with a quick-fire century, while Leicestershire skipper Mark Cosgrove also impressed

Australia allrounder Glenn Maxwell has scored a century for Yorkshire in the County Championship, putting his side in a strong position on day two of their Division 1 clash with Durham.

Maxwell reached three figures off just 101 balls, joining Adil Rashid (127) in a record 248-run sixth-wicket partnership that rescued Yorkshire from 5-79.

The pair hit 40 boundaries between them, with the Australian allrounder finally falling to the bowling of Ryan Pringle, caught at deep extra cover by Graham Clarke for 140 off 144.

Maxwell’s knock was the latest in a string of impressive performances from the allrounder, who scored a match-winning 65 off 51 balls to guide Yorkshire to a 32-run win in England’s domestic One-Day Cup last week.

That innings came four days after the 26-year-old had scored 111 in another one-dayer against Worcestershire.

Maxwell was originally scheduled to join the Australia A team, who are currently touring India, but had his stay with Yorkshire extended after teammate Aaron Finch underwent foot surgery last month.

Australia will hope Maxwell’s good form for Yorkshire continues ahead of the limited-overs component of the Qantas Tour of the British Isles, which will begin later this month at the conclusion of the fifth Test.

In other County action, Leicestershire captain Mark Cosgrove hit his first home century for the Foxes as they passed 300 for the first time in 15 championship innings against Derbyshire.

The South Australian batsman hit 15 fours and a six to reach his hundred off 114 deliveries before edging the following delivery from Mark Footitt to first slip.

His innings rescued the Foxes from a difficult position after they lost their first three wickets for 72 runs, Cosgrove joining Ireland international Niall O'Brien (60) in a 97-run fifth-wicket stand.

Leicestershire finished the day 8-304 in reply to Derbyshire’s 345.
