Maxwell helps Yorkshire post win

Allrounder makes an immediate impact in his England domestic T20 debut

Glenn Maxwell has made an immediate impact in his England domestic T20 debut, helping Yorkshire claim a six-wicket victory over Nottinghamshire.

Chasing Nottinghamshire’s 7-143, Yorkshire skipper Andrew Gale led the way with an unbeaten 68 as his team reached the target with seven balls to spare, helped by cameos from Maxwell (20 off 12) and Andy Hodd (22 off 26).

It was Yorkshire’s first Twenty20 win at Trent Bridge in three years.

Maxwell was a welcome addition to the Yorkshire ranks, having arrived at Headingly earlier in the week after finishing his stint with Indian Premier League team Kings XI Punjab.

Ahead of his Yorkshire debut, Maxwell said he hoped to make an impact.

“I am looking forward to playing some red-ball cricket – initially as cover for Aaron (Finch) and then for Yorkshire second team when he comes back,” Maxwell said.

“It is great to be representing Yorkshire, especially after what they achieved last season in winning the County Championship.”

In other domestic T20 action, Leicestershire skipper Mark Cosgrove praised the efforts of his team after they cruised to a seven-wicket win over Derbyshire for their first victory of the summer.

Wicketkeeper Niall O'Brien scored an unbeaten 47 off 27 balls and was aided by scores of 30 plus from brother Kevin O’Brien (31) and Ned Eckersley (39).

Leicestershire spinner Jigar Naik starred with the ball claiming 3-23.

"It's always good to celebrate a win, and yes, hopefully it will lift everybody connected with the club,” Cosgrove said.

"Jigar Naik changed the game with his spell in their innings, we took our catches - which we haven't always been doing this season - and then the batsmen did their job.”

Lancashire lost five wickets in eight balls to hand Durham an upset victory at Old Trafford.

Defending 155, John Hastings put Durham on track for victory when he claimed two wickets in two balls, while Ashwell Prince was the only player to make a significant contribution with the bat for Lancashire, scoring 78.

Lancashire will no doubt be pleased to learn their ranks will soon be bolstered by Australia allrounder James Faulkner, who landed in Manchester on Friday night to join up with Lancashire after completing his Indian Premier League duties.

Hastings said it was an important victory for Durham.

"We probably left a few (runs) out there batting first, 15 or 20 runs maybe,” Hastings said after the match.

“But the way the boys bowled was fantastic.

"We stuck to our plans and used the wicket, which was tiring a bit in the last few overs. We used our slower balls and did a really good job.”

In Cardiff, Shaun Tait shone with the ball as Essex won their first T20 Blast game of the year.

Helped by Ravi Bopara, who took 2-25, Tait snared 3-28 as Glamorgan were held to 8-144 from their 20 overs.

Michael Hogan (2-19) was impressive with the ball for Glamorgan, but was not able to stop Bopara, who never looked in trouble of losing his wicket as he dictated the innings, scoring an unbeaten 81 as Essex won by five wickets with 14 balls to spare.

In Taunton, Somerset suffered a dramatic batting collapse to fall five runs short of victory against Sussex.

The visitors had scored 6-175 thanks to Luke Wright's 49 and a quickfire 37 from England paceman Chris Jordan.

Somerset seemed well placed at 1-78 in the chase, but lost five wickets for 18 runs to slump to 6-98.

Needing 24 from the final over for victory, Jim Allenby scored 79 off 56 but when he was run out with three balls remaining, Sussex saw out the win.
