I'm batting as well as ever: Maxwell

Despite a below-par series with the bat in New Zealand, Glenn Maxwell says he has no concerns about his form

Despite scoring just six runs in three innings against New Zealand, allrounder Glenn Maxwell says he feels he is hitting the ball as well as ever as he prepares to make the switch back to red-ball cricket for Victoria's Sheffield Shield clash with South Australia starting Sunday.

Maxwell scored 0, 6 and 0 in Chappell-Hadlee series against the Black Caps following scores of 3 and 1 in two T20s against India.

"That's the funny thing, I haven’t made a lot of runs in my last couple of digs but I don't feel out of form," Maxwell said at the MCG on Thursday.

"Especially Shield cricket, it's something I've found it easy to transition back into.

"(Form is) something I haven't really thought about being out of at all recently. You look back two-and-a-half weeks ago and I had the innings of my career (scoring 96 against India).

"It's pretty solid in my memory too that I'm hitting the ball as well as I ever have."

Quick single: Bird the word for first Test against NZ

The Shield match against the West End Redbacks is likely to be the only one Maxwell is available for before he heads to South Africa with the Australia T20 squad at the end of the month.

He said while the constant changing of formats could be a difficult adjustment at times, it was part and parcel of the modern game and a golden opportunity for him to impress with Australia to travel to Sri Lanka for a Test series later this year.

"It's been a bit few and far between with the old Shield games, but it'd be good to get some runs with this game being Adelaide in good conditions, it's a beautiful place to play.

"I'll look to spend some time in the middle and look to put my name up in lights for the longer format of cricket, it's something I haven’t shied away from and it's been my main goal at some stage to get back in the Baggy Green.

"That'll only come with performance and consistent performances which is something I've been made well aware of."

Maxwell's form in New Zealand triggered a humorous exchange on social media earlier in the week, as he sought to correct an error about his average in the three ODIs across the Tasman.

"I sort of thrive off that sort of stuff, I'm always looking for something I can reply to," Maxwell said.

"I cop it on most days which I expect, but I generally sift through it every day and look for something funny I can reply to.

"Some guys don't have the tough skin to deal with stuff like that, but I actually really enjoy it. It's part of the game, part of what you cop out on the field.

"I certainly copped plenty of it in New Zealand. I was just trying to diffuse the situation and bring some humour to it, where there wasn’t a whole lot of humour (in the original Tweet)."
