BBL Fantasy preview: Hobart Hurricanes

Brilliant Bailey leads the way but there are plenty of other tempting options for Fantasy players in this squad

Squad: George Bailey (c), Jofra Archer (international), James Bazley, Cameron Boyce, Dan Christian, Hamish Kingston, Ben McDermott, Simon Milenko, Tymal Mills (international), David Moody, Tim Paine, Jake Reed, Sam Rainbird, Tom Rogers, Clive Rose, D'Arcy Short, Matthew Wade

In: Jofra Archer, Tymal Mills, Tom Rogers, David Moody, Matt Wade. *One still to be announced

Out: Stuart Broad, Kumar Sangakkara, Shaun Tait, Beau Webster, Jonathan Wells, Dominic Michael

Master blaster: If his List A and first-class form is any indication, veteran George Bailey ($60,100) represents great value in BBL|07. The Hurricanes' smiling assassin is always a handful in the middle overs, alternating his stroke play between conventional and innovative, and regularly finding the boundary at key moments. Add him to your team and he's unlikely to let you down.

Strike weapon: Leg-spinners might cost a few runs in T20 cricket but regularly they repay their team in wickets, and such is the case with Hobart tweaker Cameron Boyce ($44,600). The experienced leggie has 17 wickets across the past two BBL campaigns and looms as Hobart’s main spin option, and he is an excellent price considering his wicket-taking record.

Young gun: Ben McDermott ($77,000) announced himself as a young player with serious class last summer when he smashed a stunning century in an outrageous 'Canes run chase. The more Hobart see of that from their young charge, the happier they will be, and while that knock saw his price jump, this 22-year-old excitement machine could well be worth it.

Overseas impact: A starter with the Heat last summer, Tymal Mills ($51,400) impressed with his pace at the Gabba and the Englishman then became the talk of the cricket world when he fetched an eye-watering AUD$2.3m from Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL auction. The left-arm quick is now on the books at the Hurricanes, and big things will be expected. At a reasonable price and still largely an unknown quantity to plenty of batsmen, he may well be worth the gamble.

Surprise packet: Right-arm paceman Tom Rogers ($20,000) debuted in the JLT Sheffield Shield last month and has quickly shown his capabilities. Rogers is an ACT product but has his chance on the Apple Isle now, and is already showing signs of delivering. The 23-year-old can also handle a bat and in a team that is unlikely to have its fast bowlers locked in just yet, he could earn himself some game time. Check the Hurricanes' first squad and if he's there, consider forking out the basement $20k.

Fantasy bargain: Currently out of the Test frame, it will be interesting to see to what extent Matthew Wade ($45,400) plays a role in Australia's limited-overs summer. Either way, he'll be available for his new franchise in the early rounds and is likely to push his way into the middle order – or in the absence of Tim Paine, he could even open the innings. A dashing 72no in the Shield this week suggests his form with the bat may have turned a corner, meaning shrewd Fantasy players might be tempted to pinch him while he is so affordable.
