Paine replaces Bailey as skipper

Wicketkeeper-batsman to lead Hobart Hurricanes in BBL|05 as Bailey steps down due to national duty

Tim Paine has returned to a senior leadership position in Tasmanian cricket, taking over from George Bailey as captain of KFC Big Bash League franchise Hobart Hurricanes.

Bailey announced on Thursday that he had relinquished his position as Hurricanes skipper in order to focus on his busy one-day international schedule with the national team.

The position will now be held by Paine, who stepped down as Bailey's deputy at Tasmania last year in a bid to concentrate more on his own game.

The 30-year-old, who played four Tests for Australia in 2010, says he's looking forward to taking over as captain.

"I’m happy to be leading the boys in purple in BBL|05 and I can’t wait for the team to come together in December in the build-up to the tournament," he said.

"We have a really strong team and we are keen to put on a show for members and fans."

Bailey should be available for the start of Hobart's BBL campaign on December 20, but it expected to be on duty with Australia's ODI team in January.

Australia's five-match series against India runs from January 12 to January 23, with the BBL season to culminate with the final a day later.

"Tim is extremely capable and ready to lead the Hurricanes," Bailey said.

"We have worked closely over a number of years and he is going to be a great leader of our team."

Paine will lead an impressive group of players headlined by Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara, plus West Indian allrounder Darren Sammy and veteran speedster Shaun Tait.

The Hurricanes will begin their BBL|05 campaign against last season's finalists Sydney Sixers at the SCG.
