Hurricanes re-sign Wright for BBL|06

The Hobart Hurricanes have re-signed coach Damien Wright for one year and handed two year deals to Clive Rose and Ben McDermott

After a disappointing KFC Big Bash League campaign, the Hobart Hurricanes have announced they’ve re-signed coach Damien Wright for BBL|06.

The Tasmanian side finished a lowly seventh in BBL|05 after Wright led them to the final of BBL|03 in 2014, as well as the finals of the (now-defunct) Champions League later that year.

The Hurricanes narrowly missed the finals of BBL|04 and Cricket Tasmania Chairman Andrew Gaggin said they were confident that the former Victorian fast-bowling coach was the man to lead them to glory.

“Damien is a skilled and passionate coach and brings great team culture to the Hobart Hurricanes,” Gaggin said.

“He has achieved success already, taking the Hurricanes to the final of BBL|03 and the finals of the Champions League in India in 2014, and we are keen for the Hurricanes to again achieve success in BBL|06.

“The offer is for one year, however the BBL is a dynamic league and there aren’t many long-term contracts signed for that reason.”

Wright, a domestic cricket stalwart for Tasmania and Victoria in his playing days, was delighted to be leading the men in purple for another season.

“The Hobart Hurricanes are a great club to be a part of and I’m excited for the future,” he said.

“There is no doubt we were disappointed with our performance last season and the hunger is there for success in BBL|06 to give back to our loyal members and fans.”

The Hurricanes also announced a left-arm spinner Clive Rose and wicketkeeper-batsman Ben McDermott have each put pen to paper for two years.

Rose played six matches for Hobart in BBL|05 after crossing from the Melbourne Stars while McDermott, son of former Australia fast-bowler Craig McDermott, joins the Hurricanes after stints with the Brisbane Heat and the Melbourne Renegades.

There are four spots remaining on the Hurricanes list, including one for a second international, with Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara on board for another season.

Hobart Hurricanes players under contract for BBL|06: George Bailey, Tim Paine, Ben Dunk, Kumar Sangakkara, Dan Christian, Shaun Tait, Cameron Boyce, Simon Milenko, Jake Reed, Sam Rainbird, Jonathan Wells, Dom Michael, Clive Rose, Ben McDermott.
