ICC crown new world No.1 Test bowler

England fast bowler achieves career-high Test bowling ranking after man-of-the-match effort in South Africa

Stuart Broad's stunning performance in England's series-clinching win over South Africa in Johannesburg has seen him crowned the new world No.1 ranked Test bowler.

Broad's remarkable 6-17 in the second innings at the Wanderers destroyed the Proteas, with the paceman taking five for one in 31 balls during his opening onslaught before returning to claim the final wicket as the hosts were bowled out for 83 inside 34 overs.

England went on to chase down the target of 74 for the loss of three wickets, and after celebrating their unassailable 2-0 series lead, the tourists now have another reason to cheer.

Broad, 29, jumped two spots from third to first, gaining 27 rating points to usurp India spinner Ravi Ashwin as the premier Test bowler on the planet.

The right-armer is the first England bowler to top the rankings since Steve Harmison in 2004, and before that it was Sir Ian Botham in 1980.

England are only eight rating points away from possessing the batting/bowling quinella after Joe Root shot up two spots to move into second place following his ninth Test century in the third Test.

Root's 110 saw him gain 18 rating points to sit behind Australia captain Steve Smith, who will have a chance to increase his lead when his side travels to New Zealand next month for two Tests in Brendon McCullum's final series for the Black Caps.

David Warner retains his position at No.5 in the Test batting ranks, while Josh Hazlewood remains in eighth spot as Australia's highest-ranked five-day bowler.
