ABdV dethrones Warner as ODI king

South African moves top of ICC ODI batting rankings, Kagiso Rabada breaks into top five bowlers

Australia’s explosive opener David Warner has been dethroned as the world’s best one-day international batsman by South Africa captain AB de Villiers.

The latest update of the official International Cricket Council player rankings sees de Villiers return to top spot just two months after losing the crown to India’s Virat Kohli.

Quick Single: De Villiers breaks another ODI record

De Villiers’ 262 runs in South Africa’s recent 3-2 ODI series win over New Zealand moved him past 9,000 runs in the 50-over format at record pace, reaching the milestone in 205 innings, 23 innings faster than the previous record holder Sourav Ganguly of India.

The 33-year-old has now reached the No.1 ranking for an incredible 10th time and hasn’t been outside the top five since September, 2009.

Warner climbed to the apex of ODI batting in January after scoring six centuries in 11 matches, including a career-high 179 against Pakistan at the Adelaide Oval.

The 30-year-old was named Australia’s One-Day International Player of the Year at the Allan Border Medal awards night this summer before taking out the top gong for a second-straight year.

Warner blasts career-best 179

England’s Joe Root has moved into the fourth spot after his 101 against the West Indies in Bridgetown, joining de Villiers, Warner, Kohli and South African Faf du Plessis in the top five.

Proteas speedster Kagiso Rabada moved up to a career-best fifth, two positions behind Australia’s Mitchell Starc, who has been ruled out of the Qantas Tour of India with a fractured foot.
