Perry climbs up ICC player rankings

Australia allrounder has been recognised for her starring role in the ongoing World Cup

Ellyse Perry’s stunning run of form for Australia at the World Cup has been recognised with a rise to third spot in the latest International Cricket Council player rankings update.

Perry has made the rankings move on the back of five consecutive half-centuries leading into Thursday’s semi-final against India in Derby.

The 26-year-old – who has yet to be dismissed for less than 50 in the ongoing ODI tournament - also returns to the top of the allrounder rankings, replacing West Indies captain Stafanie Taylor following a disappointing campaign from the Caribbean side.

Australia now boast four of the top 12 batters in the rankings list, with skipper Meg Lanning maintaining her hold on top spot, vice-captain Alex Blackwell falling one place to eighth and opener Nicole Bolton rising to a new personal best of 11th place.

India captain Mithali Raj is closing in on Lanning’s hold over the No.1 spot and both players loom as key figures in Thursday’s knock-out encounter.

Raj has been in superb touch throughout the tournament with four scores of 50 or more and also became the leading run-scorer in women’s ODIs on her way to breaking the unprecedented 6,000-run barrier.

Among the bowlers, Australian left-arm finger spinner Jess Jonassen moved up three spots to second place behind South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp, but the big mover is Proteas skipper Dane van Niekerk.

The South African’s leg spin has captured 15 wickets at the barely believable average of 8.33 and resulted in an increase of 14 places to fifth in the player rankings.
