Smith named in ICC teams of 2015

Australia captain joined by two teammates in Test XI while spearhead Starc leads ODI attack

Steve Smith's golden run for Australia has hit new heights after he was named in the International Cricket Council's Test and one-day international teams of the year today.

Smith is joined by his deputy David Warner and fast bowler Josh Hazlewood in the Test XI, while world No.1 one-day bowler Mitchell Starc secures a spot in the ODI outfit.

The 26-year-old Australia captain plundered 1,724 runs and seven centuries at 82.57 in 13 Tests in the qualification period that ran from September 18, 2014 to September 13, 2015, along with 1,249 runs and four hundreds at 59.47 in 26 ODIs.

Opening the batting alongside Ashes rival Alastair Cook, Warner smashed 1,182 runs and four centuries at 47.28, including twin centuries against India at the Adelaid Oval last summer.

Smith and Warner are joined in the top order by Cook, New Zealand run machine Kane Williamson, Pakistan's evergreen veteran Younis Khan and Ashes man of the series Joe Root, with Khan's teammate Sarfraz Ahmed named as wicketkeeper.

As the lone Australian representative with the red, and now pink, ball, Hazlewood has made a stellar start to his Test career, capturing 53 wickets in 12 Tests, 40 of those coming in nine matches in the selected period.

The Bendemeer boy has battled form and a heavy workload in the past 12 months, but reached the 50 Test wicket milestone faster than Australian champions Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne and Mitchell Johnson.

Hazlewood shares the bowling duties with England's Stuart Broad, recent rival Trent Boult and Pakistan leg-spinner Yasir Shah.

There was no room for the year's leading wicket-taker Ravi Ashwin, whose 55 wickets in eight matches wasn't enough to break into the final XI. Instead he'll carry the drinks as 12th man.

Following on from his man-of-the-tournament performance in the 2015 Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Starc was a certainty to take the new ball in the ODI side.

With 47 wickets from only 22 matches, Starc is the leading ODI wicket-taker this year, averaging 17.70 per victim at an extraordinary strike rate of 23.3.

Despite being crowned world champions for a record fifth time in March, only two Australians made the ODI team led by South African superstar AB de Villiers.

Sri Lanka's Tilakaratne Dlishan partners South Africa's Hashim Amla at the top of the order, with retired Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara batting at first-drop and taking the wicketkeeping duties after smashing a record four consecutive centuries in the World Cup.

De Villiers comes in next, followed by Smith and Black Caps blaster Ross Taylor, with Boult, India's Mohammed Shami, Starc, Bangladesh's Mustafizur Rahman and Proteas spinner Imran Tahir rounding out the team.
