Renshaw, Maxwell fall cheaply; Lyon attacked

Aussies lose top-order wickets, Nathan Lyon cops some punishment as tour match ends in a draw

Matt Renshaw and Glenn Maxwell fell cheaply while Nathan Lyon was hit over the rope on the final day of Australia's only tour game before their first Test against India.

Renshaw is expected to open the batting with David Warner during the series opener, which starts in Pune on Thursday.

But the 20-year-old lasted only 21 minutes at the crease on Sunday before he was bowled by India A captain Hardik Pandya for 10.

It was his second low score of the match after he nicked behind for 11 on the opening day of the match.

Highlights: Australia v India A, Day Two

Coach Darren Lehmann last month floated the prospect of Renshaw being dropped despite scoring 184 at the SCG in his most recent Test.

The most obvious replacement would be subcontinent specialist Shaun Marsh, who scored a ton at Brabourne Stadium on Friday to all but confirm his Test recall.

Usman Khawaja, the only frontline batsman left out of the XI for the tour game, is another option should selectors want to leave Marsh in the middle order.

"For me it's about preparing and getting ready for the Test myself and then once the team is announced, then we work as a partnership," Warner said, having himself logged scores of 25 and 35.

"When you're young and come into this environment, you're going to be thrown a a lot of ideas.

"I just said to him (Renshaw): keep it simple, and you're going to have learn and learn fast."

Australia finished on 4-110 at stumps on the final day of the three-day contest in Mumbai.

Highlights: Australia v India A, Day One

Steve O'Keefe, who earlier logged figures of 3-101 from 24 overs, batted at No.4 and finished unbeaten on 19 after spending more than two hours at the crease.

Maxwell, out for one after being promoted to first drop in Australia's second innings, lost ground in his battle with Mitch Marsh for the vacant No.6 spot in the Test side.

Mitch Marsh posted a half-century in this match and Australia's recent intra-squad game in Dubai, where he dismissed skipper Steve Smith.

Maxwell didn't bowl until the 69th over of India A's innings in Mumbai in a sign he may not figure prominently in Smith's plans for the first Test.

Marsh learns his lesson since Test axing

The hosts played Maxwell with ease, but he wasn't slapped around Brabourne as much as Lyon.

Lyon recorded figures of 4-162 in 28.5 overs, including 57 runs in a six-over burst early on the third morning.

India A scored 171 runs in Sunday's frenetic morning session.

Shreyas Iyer finished unbeaten on 202 from 210 balls as the hosts were finally bowled out for 403.

Marsh reflects on great day for Australia in Mumbai

It was No.8 batsman Krishnappa Gowtham, with a first-class batting average of 19.63 prior to his knock of 74, who led the assault on Lyon.

Although it's worth noting that Lyon has become accustomed to being hit around in pre-series practice matches by local batsmen with very little to lose; he conceded 136 runs from just 22 overs against Essex during the 2015 Ashes tour and 0-72 from 13 overs in the first innings of a warm-up game in Sri Lanka last year.

"That's their mentality, to apply a bit of pressure on our spinners," Warner said.

"I thought he bowled very well."
