WHAT EACH FRANCHISE NEEDS

(teams listed in order of money available)

KINGS XI PUNJAB

Kolkata triumph despite Maxwell blitz

Squad: David Miller, Manan Vohra, Axar Patel, Murali Vijay, Glenn Maxwell, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Anureet Singh, Sandeep Sharma, Shardul Thakur, Shaun Marsh, Wriddhiman Saha, Nikhil Naik, Mohit Sharma, Marcus Stoinis, KC Cariappa, Armaan Jaffer, Pardeep Sahu, Swapnil Singh, Hashim Amla

Who they've let go: Mitchell Johnson, Kyle Abbott, Farhaan Behardien, Rishi Dhawan

Overseas spots remaining: 4

BBL|06 flavour: Aussies Shaun Marsh and Glenn Maxwell have been mainstays at the Kings XI for many years now, while Melbourne Stars allrounder and Australia's new ODI batting hero Marcus Stoinis will return after a breakthrough campaign in India last year.

Money available: AUD $4.54 million

What they need: The Kings XI definitely lack some fast-bowling talent, especially of international quality, while their top-order batting is perhaps a little thin, although they do possess plenty of powerful batting allrounders. The probable early departure of South African David Miller for international duty means they'll be looking to replace him, too.

DELHI DAREDEVILS

De Kock century powers Delhi in huge chase

Squad: Jean-Paul Duminy, Mohammad Shami, Quinton de Kock, Karun Nair, Sam Billings, Shahbaz Nadeem, Mayank Agarwal, Jayant Yadav, Amit Mishra, Shreyas Iyer, Zaheer Khan, Sanju Samson, Chris Morris, Carlos Brathwaite, Rishabh Pant, CV Milind, Khaleel Ahmed, Pratyush Singh.

Who they've let go: Imran Tahir, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Joel Paris, Pawan Negi, Pawan Suyal, Akhil Herwadkar, Mahipal Lomror

Overseas spots remaining: 4

BBL|06 flavour: A couple of imports who made cameos on either side of the BBL divide in Sydney this summer - Thunder allrounder Carlos Brathwaite and Sixers batsman Sam Billings - will return to Delhi in 2017

Money available: AUD $4.49 million

What they need: Delhi's fast-bowling strength seems a little thin, while they also appear to be short of a big name allrounder. And with the likely early departure of South Africans Quinton de Kock, JP Duminy and Chris Morris and well as Englishman Sam Billings, they'll be on the hunt for some overseas talent.

SUNRISERS HYDERABAD

Trophy caps off Warner's remarkable IPL season

Squad: Shikhar Dhawan, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, David Warner, Moises Henriques, Mustafizur Rahman, Naman Ojha, Deepak Hooda, Ricky Bhui, Kane Williamson, Siddarth Kaul, Bipul Sharma, Ashish Nehra, Yuvraj Singh, Ben Cutting, Barinder Sran, Abhimanyu Mithun, Vijay Shankar

Who they've let go: Trent Boult, Karn Sharma, Ashish Reddy, Eoin Morgan, Tirumalasetti Suman, Aditya Tare

Overseas spots remaining: 4

BBL|06 flavour: Sydney Sixers skipper Moises Henriques and Brisbane Heat allrounder Ben Cutting were crucial to the Sunrisers' triumph last season, while fellow Aussie David Warner will lead the way once again.

Money available: AUD $4.06 million

What they need: The lack of a top-class spinner in Hyderabad's squad is glaring, while the departure of Kiwi quick Trent Boult in the off season means an overseas fast man will be high on the agenda.

KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS

Hogg, Hastings star in Delhi demolition

Squad: Gautam Gambhir, Sunil Narine, Kuldeep Yadav, Andre Russell (suspended), Manish Pandey, Suryakumar Yadav, Piyush Chawla, Robin Uthappa, Shakib Al Hasan, Chris Lynn, Umesh Yadav, Yusuf Pathan, Sheldon Jackson, Ankit Singh Rajpoot

Who they've let go: Morne Morkel, Brad Hogg, Jason Holder, Colin Munro, John Hastings, Shaun Tait, Jaydev Unadkat, Rajagopal Satish, Manan Sharma

Overseas spots remaining: 6

BBL|06 flavour: The BBL's biggest basher Chris Lynn will hope to return from a neck injury for the Knight Riders, while Melbourne Renegades star spinner Sunil Narine is always a player to watch in the shortest format. Sydney Thunder allrounder Andre Russell won't play in the IPL this year due to a doping suspension.

Money available: AUD $3.84 million

What they need: Kolkata are likely to be the most active franchises in the auction after letting six overseas players go in the off-season. They'll be desperate to replenish their fast-bowling stocks and they also lack at least one more top- or middle-order batting star.

RISING PUNE SUPERGIANTS

Zampa's star rises with record-breaking IPL spell

Squad: MS Dhoni, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravi Ashwin, Steve Smith, Faf du Plessis, Mitchell Marsh, Ashik Dinda, Ankush Bains, Rajat Bhatia, Ankit Sharma, Ishwar Pandey, Adam Zampa, Jaskaran Singh, Baba Aparajith, Deepak Chahar, Usman Khawaja

Who they've let go: Kevin Pietersen, Ishant Sharma, Irfan Pathan, Thisara Perera, RP Singh, Scott Boland, Murugan Ashwin, Peter Handscomb, Saurabh Tiwary, Albie Morkel, George Bailey

Overseas spots remaining: 4

BBL|06 flavour: With a tournament-high of four Australians on their list, there's plenty of interest from Aussie fans in the Supergiants. Skipper Steve Smith and Mitchell Marsh saw their campaigns cut short by injury last year, while Adam Zampa and Usman Khawaja both impressed for the fledgling franchise.

Money available: AUD $3.40 million

What they need: The departure of Kevin Pietersen means RPS will be chasing a big-name international batsman or even a batting allrounder, while their fast-bowling stocks will also need replenishing after they discarded six quicks - including Aussie Scott Boland - in the off-season.

GUJARAT LIONS

Finch and Maxwell recall their encounters

Squad: Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, James Faulkner, Brendon McCullum, Aaron Finch, Dwayne Smith, Dinesh Karthik, Dhawal Kulkarni, Praveen Kumar, Andrew Tye, Ishan Kishan, Pradeep Sangwan, Shivil Kaushik, Shadab Jakati, Jaydev Shah.

Who they've let go: Dale Steyn, Paras Dogra, Eklavya Dwivedi, Sarbjeet Ladda, Pravin Tambe, Umang Sharma, Amit Mishra, Akshdeep Nath

Overseas spots remaining: 3

BBL|06 flavour: There are plenty of Australians at one of the IPL's newest franchises, including Adelaide Strikers captain Brad Hodge who will return as head coach. Australia's T20 skipper Aaron Finch will also return along with Melbourne Stars allrounder James Faulkner and Perth Scorchers fast-bowler AJ Tye, while Brisbane Heat skipper Brendon McCullum will power their top order again. Melbourne Renegades allrounder Dwayne Bravo is hoping to return and make his comeback from a hamstring injury that curtailed his BBL|06 campaign.

Money available: AUD $2.79 million

What they need: The Lions have plenty of batting firepower, but they'll be keen to boost their fast-bowling and spin stocks as well as add another allrounder given Bravo's return date from injury is unclear.

ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE

Records tumble as Kohli, ABdV go berserk

Squad: Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Shane Watson, Mitchell Starc, Yuzvendra Chahal, Harshal Patel, Mandeep Singh, Adam Milne, Sarfaraz Khan, Sreenath Arvind, Kedar Jadhav, Stuart Binny, Samuel Badree, Travis Head, Sachin Baby, Iqbal Abdullah, KL Rahul, Avesh Khan, Tabraiz Shamsi.

Who they've let go: Chris Jordan, Abu Nechim, David Wiese, Kane Richardson, V Malik, P Dubey, Akshay Karnewar, Vikas Tokas, Parveez Rasool, Varun Aaron

Overseas spots remaining: 1

BBL|06 flavour: The shock announcement on Sunday that Mitchell Starc would not take part in the IPL this year means Shane Watson and Travis Head are the only Aussies in the squad. The Brisbane Heat's star West Indian spinner Samuel Badree will also be a key player in a side without too many top-class spinners.

Money available: AUD $2.49 million

What they need: One of the more settled squads in the IPL, RCB will be looking for a new fast-bowler having released the likes of Kane Richardson, Chris Jordan and David Wiese while another top-class spinner would be handy, as well.

MUMBAI INDIANS

Lynn adds another stunner to his highlights reel

Squad: Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga, Hardik Pandya, Parthiv Patel, Harbhajan Singh, Ambati Rayudu, Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Gopal, Lendl Simmons, R Vinay Kumar, Mitchell McClenghan, J Suchith, Siddesh Lad, Jos Buttler, Nitish Rana, Tim Southee, Jitesh Sharma, Krunal Pandya, Deepak Punia.

Who they've let go: Martin Guptill, Corey Anderson, Marchant de Lange, Unmukt Chand, Akshay Wakhare, Nathu Singh, Kishore Pramod Kamath, Jerome Taylor

Overseas spots remaining: 3

BBL|06 flavour: Despite a squad brimming with international stars, Mumbai currently have no Aussies on their list and Adelaide Strikers allrounder Kieron Pollard is their only BBL player.

Cash remaining: AUD $2.24 million

What they need: With overseas quicks Jerome Taylor and Marchant de Lange released in the off-season, Mumbai have scope to add a fast-bowling import while they'll also need a replacement for Englishman Jos Buttler (ie. a destructive batsman) given he's due to leave midway through the tournament for international duty.
