Debutant Ball speeds into ODI history

Young quick becomes first Englishman to take five wickets on debut in thriller against Bangladesh

Speedster Jake Ball announced himself on the international stage in impressive fashion overnight, becoming the first Englishman to take five wickets on ODI debut.

Ball, who has one Test to his name after debuting in July against Pakistan at Lord's, was instrumental in England's incredible get-out-of-jail victory over Bangladesh in Mirpur, taking 5-51 including the vital partnership-breaking wicket of Shakib Al Hasan for 79.

Quick Single: England pull off a miracle in Mirpur

The 25-year-old took the first two wickets to fall and returned later in the innings with the hosts cruising at 4-271 - needing 39 from 51 to win.

The right-arm quick slipped in a shorter one to Shakib who played straight to midwicket, and Ball struck again the very next ball, removing young gun Mosaddek Hussain to swing the momentum suddenly.

With Adil Rashid spinning a web at the other end, England conspired to take six wickets for 17 runs, Ball striking the final blow with the wicket of Taskin Ahmed - ironically another player to have taken five wickets on ODI debut.

Bangladesh beaten after incredible collapse

Ball was the 13th player to manage the feat in ODI history, the most recent before him being Sri Lankan seamer Dasun Shanaka against Ireland in June.

In a memorable night for England, there were other notable achievements, with the visitors passing 300 for the first time in nine attempts in ODIs in Bangladesh.

Ben Stokes also scored a maiden ODI hundred in his 45th match, while Ball's fellow debutant, 21-year-old Ben Duckett, became the third-youngest England player after Ben Hollioake and Andrew Flintoff to score a half-century on debut, making a fine 60.

Ball was also added to England's Test squad with the withdrawal of James Anderson, and spoke last month about his willingness to tour Bangladesh despite the perceived security risks.

"I didn't really have to think about whether to travel much at all," he told the Nottingham Post. "We had meetings as a team where the situation was explained to us.

"It wasn't a hard decision. Any chance I get to play for my country, I'm going to take it.

"My aim in Bangladesh is just to take any opportunity I get."
