Doran earns his stripes in Tigers' one-day squad

Rising star Jake Doran is set to make his one-day domestic debut after being named in Tasmania's 14-man squad for next month's Matador BBQs One-Day Cup in Sydney.

The 18-year-old left-hander made the big decision in the off-season to switch states from NSW, with the prospect of regular senior cricket seen as the biggest drawcard.

Doran has featured in the KFC Big Bash League and in various tour matches for the Prime Minister's XI and Cricket Australia XI, but is yet to make an appearance on the state scene in either the Sheffield Shield or the domestic one-day tournament.

Cricket Australia's National Talent Manager Greg Chappell has previously likened Doran to Australian cricket great Mike Hussey, while Hussey himself was full of praise for the young gun after playing alongside him for Sydney Thunder and the PM's XI.

"He's highly regarded as a future Australian player," Hussey told cricket.com.au earlier this year.

"I hope that doesn't put too much pressure on him. He's a brilliant talent.

"I'm sure there's going to be ups and downs throughout his career, but what I like about him is he's got a great work ethic, he's a great character and he's willing to learn and he wants to put in the hard work."

The highly-rated young gun is expected to slot into a Tigers middle order featuring two of Australia's World Cup representatives in George Bailey and James Faulkner.

Former Test quick Jackson Bird will make a long-awaited white-ball return for Tasmania, with his last one-day appearance for the Tigers coming way back in December 2012.

The 28-year-old paceman made a successful return to cricket for Hampshire during the English summer, after a prognosis in April suggested he could be out of the game for 12 months due to a bulging disk in his neck.

Unlike last year, Tasmania will have the services of captain Bailey, Faulkner, Xavier Doherty and Alex Doolan for the duration of the tournament after they all spent time with the national side in the UAE last October.

"The squad has had an excellent pre-season, which has allowed all players to run into good form for when the tournament begins," Chairman of Selectors Michael Farrell said.

"A number of our players have had domestic and international experience in these type of tournaments, which is important.

"Having three members of Australia’s recent World Cup winning squad available in George Bailey, James Faulkner, and Xavier Doherty is also fantastic for our team and they will provide a great level of skill and leadership."

Ben Dunk and Tim Paine will be looking to rediscover last year's form at the top of the order, with Dunk's record 229no set to be an individual benchmark that will provide a challenge for all batsmen to surpass.

Cricket Tasmania announced on Saturday that promising batsman Jordan Silk has withdrawn from the three-week tournament due to personal reasons.

Tasmania begin their campaign against the myFootDr Queensland Bulls at North Sydney Oval on October 5.
