Pattinson to have scan on hamstring

Fast bowler to undergo MRI on Monday after leaving the field in Bupa Sheffield Shield match in Alice Springs

Victorian Bushrangers fast bowler James Pattinson will have a precautionary MRI scan on Monday after he was forced from the field on day four of the Bupa Sheffield Shield match against the Tasmanian Tigers in Alice Springs.

The 24-year-old pulled up after the final ball of his eighth over clutching his hamstring just before the tea break, leaving the field immediately.

However, good signs shortly followed when Pattinson was bowling unimpaired off a short run during the tea interval, but he was absent when Victoria took to the field for the final session.

Pattinson has remodelled his action after breaking down in his last two Tests for Australia against England at Lord's in 2013 and South Africa in Cape Town 12 months ago.

Cricket Australia General Manager of Team Performance Pat Howard said earlier this month the careful management of Pattinson was in the best interest for all parties.

"By making that gradual return to red ball cricket it should allow him to work his way back into the longer form of the game without overloading his body and that approach should benefit James, Cricket Victoria and the Australian team in the long term," Howard told cricket.com.au.

Before his return to first-class cricket, Pattinson played five matches for the Melbourne Renegades in the KFC T20 Big Bash League, taking seven wickets, including 3-24 against Jacques Kallis and the Sydney Thunder.

Pattinson back with a bang

His return to four-day cricket was a tough one, claiming 4-96 off 24.4 overs in Victoria's innings and 13 runs loss to the MyFoot Dr Queensland Bulls at the Gabba.

Pattinson missed the 156-run loss to the NSW Blues in Wagga Wagga 12 days ago before returning in the Red Centre earlier this week, taking 3-34 off 17 overs in the first innings and 1-20 in the second.

Meanwhile, Bulls rookie Michael Philipson become the first off-spinner to take seven wickets in an innings for Queensland, with his 7-107 breaking the record that stood for more than a century.

The previous best in Sheffield Shield cricket was 6-65 by Graham Wyatt against the Alcohol.Thing Again Western Warriors at the Gabba in the 1976-77 season.
