Taylor to lead England in ODI

England name squad to take on Ireland and Taylor given the nod to captain in the absence of Morgan

England may have offered a glimpse into the future of their one-day side, naming a new-look 11-man squad led by James Taylor for next week’s one-off ODI against Ireland.

The team’s shock World Cup group-stage exit prompted calls for an overhaul of England’s one day set-up, but the fresh faces included for the Dublin encounter are due to the May 8 match falling just three days after the end of the final Test in the Caribbean.

England will be captained by James Taylor, with regular skipper Eoin Morgan granted release from early-season duties to play in the Indian Premier League for Sunrisers Hyderabad, along with fellow World Cup squad member Ravi Bopara.

Morgan has featured in just two of a possible seven IPL games to date, while Bopara has yet to miss a game.

The timing of the clash with Ireland rules out anyone playing in the final Test in Barbados, meaning James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Moeen Ali, Joe Root, Jos Buttler, Chris Jordan and Ian Bell will be absent.

However, England will fly home several reserve players from the Test squad to bolster the ODI side, while coach Peter Moores and assistant Paul Farbrace will fly directly to Dublin for training ahead of the match at the Malahide Cricket Club.

Taylor said he expected a “tough game” against the Associate nation.

“There are still some very experienced and talented cricketers in that team who I’d have been delighted to have as my captain, so it is a privilege and one I’m going to relish,” he said.

“It’s going to be brilliant leading an England team in a one-day international.

“We know it will be a tough game against Ireland and this match provides a great chance for us all to show we can play a huge role in limited overs cricket in years to come.”

Surrey’s Jason Roy is likely to join World Cup squad member Alex Hales at the top of the order, while Hampshire’s limited-overs captain James Vince and Kent wicketkeeper-batsman Sam Billings have also been included.

Five of the players have yet to be capped for England in any format.

Ireland, which came agonisingly close to advancing to the World Cup knockout stages after wins over full member nations West Indies and Zimbabwe, have named a 14-player squad for the match led by skipper, William Porterfield.

Fast bowler Tim Murtagh will return after missing the tournament with an injury, while Ireland are still seeking a new coach to replace Phil Simmons after his departure for West Indies.
