Roy’s magnificent catch no fluke

Sydney Sixers skipper Moises Henriques expects English import to keep his highlights reel rolling

Don’t be surprised if Jason Roy pulls off another classic catch this summer to go with his spectacular grab in the opening match of the new KFC Big Bash League season.

Roy was at full-stretch at backward point when he reeled in stand-in Sydney Thunder captain Ben Rohrer in the 10th over of the Sixers’ crushing nine-wicket win at Spotless Stadium.

Englishman Roy is available for only a handful of matches for the Sixers before he heads to India to fulfil his international requirements, but his captain Moises Henriques predicts his effort on Tuesday night won’t be the last time he’s in the highlights wearing magenta.

“I reckon he’s got another one in him before he goes as well,” Henriques said on Tuesday.

“You can watch it in slow-motion but watching it fast and live for the first time was excellent.

“It doesn’t actually sum up how well he moved to the ball when you watch it in slow-motion.

“Watching that in full-speed it was a great catch.

“Both those (English) guys (Roy and Sam Billings), the intensity in the field is fantastic and they kept the boys going for the 20 overs.”

Cummins hammered for 21 off an over

Roy said he saw the catch the whole way, despite it being difficult to pick up the ball at the hotspot position of backward point.

“A lot of hard work goes into fielding in Twenty20,” Roy told cricket.com.au.

“You wait for those moments in a game.

“You don’t always get a chance to pull off a catch like that. Lucky I took my chance.”

Remarkably, the stunning catch wasn’t his only jaw-dropping moment in the match.

Facing Australia speedster Pat Cummins, Roy hit a monster six 98m over wide long-on that had the record crowd agape at the sound and size of the shot.

Asked which of the two stunning moments preferred, Roy answered without hesitation.

“The six. Take the six every day of the week.”
