Goswami breaks ODI wickets record

India fast bowler Jhulan Goswami has become the highest wicket-taker in women's one-day internationals, overtaking former Australia star Cathryn Fitzpatrick with her 181st dismissal on Tuesday.

Pace spearhead Goswami achieved the feat against hosts South Africa in the 50-over quadrangular tournament in Potchefstroom.

The 34-year-old, who took three wickets in India's victory, passed Fitzpatrick's long-standing record in her 153rd ODI, with her scalps coming at an average of 21.76 and a strike rate of 41.0.

Fitzpatrick took 180 wickets at 16.79 in 109 matches between 1993 and 2006.

Australian allrounder Ellyse Perry – who currently sits ninth on the ODI wicket-taking list with 113 scalps from 83 matches – described Goswami’s record-breaking feats as “a special achievement”.

"It’s a very special achievement, ‘Fitzy’ set the standard for fast bowling in the women’s game,” Perry told cricket.com.au.

"Jhulan has been very much the next generation of that and she’s certainly a very talented cricketer.

"She’s been a rock of the Indian side for many years and it doesn’t surprise me she’s overtaken the record given how good a player she’s been.

"It’s a special thing – having played under Cathryn for a number of years, I know what a competitor she is and how much she put into playing and coaching, so it’s a pretty big achievement (to pass her record).”

Fitzpatrick’s record had stood for more than a decade, but Perry believes with more and more women’s games being played, it will only be a matter of time before another player rises to the top of the table.

"Anya Shrubsole and Katherine Brunt from England have set the standard for pace bowling around world for the last couple of years and I wouldn’t be surprised if they break records along the way,” she said.

"Anya in particular is still quite young.

"Also someone like Marizanne Kapp from South Africa, who has been around for a while but has really burst onto the scene in the last couple of years.

"There are some high-quality pace bowlers around and we’re playing more cricket than ever so there’s every chance those records will be broken."

The Board of Control for Cricket in India also congratulated former captain Goswami for her service to women's cricket since making her debut as an 18-year-old in 2002.

The Bengal cricketer led India in 25 ODIs from 2008-2011 and has represented the country in 10 Tests and 60 Twenty20 matches.

She was named women's cricketer of the year in 2007.
