'Intimidating' England target ODI silverware

Test quick suggests other teams will fear the hosts as they look to claim their first-ever major piece of 50-over silveware

Star quick Jimmy Anderson has boldly declared other teams will be "intimidated" by England in the Champions Trophy, with Joe Root insisting the hosts have the firepower to take out the title.

Under their Australian coach Trevor Bayliss, England have had a resurgence in limited-overs cricket since their disastrous 2015 World Cup campaign where they lost to Bangladesh and were knocked out in the group stage.

They made the final of the World T20 last year and they've also become a force in the 50-over format, last year smashing 444 against Pakistan at Trent Bridge, the highest-ever one-day international score.

Incredible England blast new ODI world record

Having never won either the Champions Trophy or the ODI World Cup, former Test captain Michael Vaughan thinks this could finally be the year for England to win some silverware.

And with the likes of Jonny Bairstow and Sam Billings potentially not making England's final XI, as well as Steven Finn not included in the 15-man squad, Anderson believes their depth is a sign of their strength.

"People are now intimidated a little bit playing against England," Anderson, who was left out of the squad having not played an ODI since England's World Cup exit two years ago, said on Sky Sports' Cricket podcast.

"You look at the players that we've got in the team, you look at the players we've got on the sidelines.

"You've got potentially not in that starting XI, (Jake) Ball, Bairstow, Billings. (Ben) Duckett and Finn not even in the squad.

"Some frightening talent there that's not going to get into the final XI. We've got to play on that a little."

Quick Single: England name Champions Trophy squad

While Root was announced as Alastair Cook's successor as Test captain in February, Eoin Morgan remains skipper of the 50-over side.

The ICC's No.4 ranked ODI batsman will nonetheless form an integral part of the hosts' middle-order, Root suggesting England "absolutely" have the capacity to take out their first Champions Trophy title.

"We have been playing some great cricket over the last couple of years and we keep progressing all the time," the 26-year-old told Sky.

"We feel we have now got to a place where we feel we can compete consistently against the best sides in the world.

"It is probably one of the strongest sides I have been involved in. It has got great depth in all departments and that is really exciting."

Gabriel fined after Safraz bump

Fast bowler Mark Wood will make his international return ahead of the tournament after being named as one of five specialist quicks in the squad.

And with England's new breed of attacking batsmen largely being credited for the side's resurgence, Anderson suggested Wood's skiddy style could round out their bowling attack.

"Mark Wood (is) back in the squad, people are going to be a little bit intimidated by him," Anderson continued.

"(He needs to) be the enforcer in the middle overs, bowl bouncers, be aggressive.

"The batting – that's what we've succeeded with in recent times (by) being aggressive and being intimidating to bowl at.

"I think the bowlers need to take a leaf out of their book and be as aggressive."

Quick Single: Pakistan take 1-0 lead in style

Root added: "The thing you get with Woody is raw pace.

"He has the ability to go through sides in the middle overs, when it can be very difficult to take wickets.

"It is really exciting to see him back playing and hopefully he can be really successful in the coming months."
