Anderson breaks McGrath's record

England star the most prolific ever paceman at home, continues hold over Pakistan's Shan Masood

Star England paceman Jimmy Anderson has celebrated his return from injury by breaking a record belonging to Test legend Glenn McGrath that has stood for almost a decade.

Anderson, who missed the first Test against Pakistan at Lord's due to a shoulder injury, claimed four wickets in England's thumping 330-run win at Old Trafford as the hosts levelled the four-match series 1-1.

In doing so, Anderson claimed his 458th Test wicket and his 291st on home soil, breaking McGrath's mark of 289 dismissals at home to become the game's most prolific Test paceman in his own conditions.

McGrath, who retired from Tests in January 2007 with a total of 563 wickets from 124 matches, played 66 Tests at home, one less than Anderson.

The English quick remains a long way behind Muthiah Muralidaran's overall record of 493 wickets at home, with fellow spinners Anil Kumble (350) and Shane Warne (319) also ahead of Anderson.

The Test in Manchester also saw Anderson continue his remarkable hold over Pakistan opener Shan Masood, who he has dismissed six times in six consecutive Test innings.

Anderson completed his third straight match double over Masood when he had him caught at first slip for 1 early on the final day at Old Trafford, the fourth time in a row he's had the left-hander caught in the cordon.

In three Tests against England when Anderson has been playing, Masood has now faced a total of 57 deliveries from the right-armer, scoring 15 runs and losing his wicket to him six times, an average of 2.50. Incredibly, 11 of the 15 runs and 37 of the 57 balls Masood has faced from Anderson came in the first innings at Old Trafford.

And if Anderson can complete the double against Masood in the third Test at Edgbaston starting next week, the record of another Australian bowling great is within reach.

Warne currently holds the record of eight consecutive dismissals against a batsman, South Africa's Ashwell Prince the unlucky player, and Anderson will have the spin legend in his sights in Birmingham next week.
