Burns vows to ignore selection debate

'Frustrated' recalled opener keen to make amends for Hobart failures

Australia opener Joe Burns says he will not worry about his immediate future in the Test team after a lean run of form contributed to an innings and 80-runs hiding in Hobart.

The Queenslander was recalled for the second Commonwealth Bank Test against South Africa at Blundstone Arena, but returned scores of 1 and 0 against the Proteas' crack bowling attack.

The 27-year-old was dropped after two Tests during Australia's tour of Sri Lanka after making 34 runs at 8.5 from four innings.

Man-of-the-Match Abbott's super six

But Burns earned a reprieve after Shaun Marsh was ruled out of the second Test with a broken finger picked up in Perth.

Burns has scored three Test centuries from 13 matches, but his twin failures have seen his average drop from 41.52 to 37.96.

"I'm not really too concerned about individual selections," Burns told ABC Grandstand before play on day four when Australia lost 8-40 to hand South Africa the series.

"I just want to be a part of winning teams for Australia.

"It's extremely frustrating when you miss out with the bat, your team gets rolled for 80. You want to get out there and rectify things and play well for Australia.

"You don't get out there worrying about your individual performance or individual selections.

"I'd be disappointed if I got to a point where I wasn't putting the team first. I just want us to win games of cricket."

Burns was unlucky in the second innings after he was caught behind down the leg-side from a Kyle Abbott delivery.

He was also removed lbw by Abbott in the first innings.

"It's a little bit frustrating, but I guess that's the way the game goes," Burns said of his second innings dismissal.

"Obviously you get frustrated, angry and disappointed – simply because you want to be out there making runs for your country.

"I guess with their bowlers, you know where they're going to bowl and how they're going to try and get you out. It can be a little bit of a surprise to get one down the leg side, but I guess you make your own luck in this game.

"You can walk off feeling unlucky, but you can always be better and always make more runs."

Burns started the Shield season in style, hitting 129 against New South Wales at the Gabba to stake his claim for a recall.

Foursome performance from Proteas ace

It was not enough to earn selection for the first Test in Perth, with Marsh contributing 63 and 15 in Australia's 177-run defeat.

"I feel like I'm hitting the ball really well," Burns said.

"I'm really comfortable with where my batting's at, but at the end of the day you've got to get runs on the board."
