Get Archer eligible for England ASAP: Vaughan

Ex-Test skipper calls for West Indian's residency application to be accelerated after clutch BBL performance for the Hurricanes

Former England captain Michael Vaughan wants Jofra Archer's application for an English passport to be fast-tracked after the Hobart Hurricanes recruit put in a match-winning bowling effort in their KFC Big Bash League win on Thursday.

Archer, a fast-bowler from Barbados who now resides in the United Kingdom, has been a revelation for the Hurricanes in the early stages of BBL|07 and delivered his finest performance yet against Adelaide Strikers at Blundstone Arena.

With the Strikers needing 13 to win from the final over, the 22-year-old took a wicket and conceded just five runs to finish with an impressive 3-15 from four overs in a clutch performance.

Archer, a late signing for the Hurricanes as a replacement for England Ashes call-up Tom Curran, now has eight wickets in four games at an economy rate of just six.

The speedster, who has consistently broken the 140kph barrier in the BBL, played for West Indies' Under-19s side only four years ago but has since declared his intention to qualify for England following a successful start to his career with county side Sussex.

And with England's Test side crying out for bowlers with raw pace, Vaughan urged authorities to accelerate Archer's residency application, which remains another five years away.

While he looked cool and calm in bowling the final over of Hobart's nail-biting seven-run win over the previously undefeated Strikers, Archer admitted that wasn't entirely the case.

"I was a little nervous on the inside," he said after the Blundstone Arena thriller.

"Sometimes the batting side can prey on that. That's why you always try to look confident on the outside, even if you aren't."

Archer holds his nerve in final over

Confident or not, Archer came through when it mattered.

He removed the dangerous Alex Carey in the second over of Adelaide's chase and broke a 102-run stand between Travis Head and Colin Ingram which had put the visitors back in the game.

Archer had Head skying a delivery to mid-off and then combined in the outfield with D'Arcy Short to get rid of Ingram, catching a pull shot on the boundary before lobbing it back infield to Short.

"I was a bit nervous the first two games but every one since then I'm getting a bit more confident," said Archer.

Short had another stellar game with the bat but fell agonisingly shy of a maiden T20 ton for the second time in two BBL innings.

He smacked 96 from 58 against Adelaide after scoring 97 against Sydney Thunder on New Year's Day.
