Young star on the road to recovery

Jordan Silk eyes big summer

One of Australia’s brightest young batting stars is well on the road to recovery ahead what promises to be a massive summer of international and domestic cricket.

Jordan Silk, the man many dub as a future Australian Test opener, suffered a nasty stress injury to his right shin during BBL|03 and missed the rest of the Bupa Sheffield Shield season as a consequence.

“I’m still kind of recovering from that (injury) now and just getting back into my rehab,” Silk told the Sydney Sixers' website.

“I’m hopefully not too far away from being able to participate in some form of cricket.”

Silk had a solid start to the 2013/14 Shield season, averaging 35.08 across 12 pre-Christmas innings to go with a marathon century in last season’s Shield final and his Bradman Young Cricketer gong at this year’s Allan Border Medal presentation

With such a promising future on the horizon, Silk is understandably keen to get back out on the paddock.

“I’m on a jogging program at the moment, so that’s really just started,” he said.

“Other than recover and rest, there wasn’t really much more I could do with that kind of injury so I’ve been taking it pretty easy.

“Now I’m getting back into it and doing a bit of gym work on my upper body too just to get that back in shape.

“We’re not sure how long yet, we’re just going to assess it in a few weeks time and see where I’m at.

“It’s a slow process, but it’s better off now than in December.”

The timing of the injury has also meant Silk is able to take full advantage of the newly-opened National Cricket Centre to aid in his recovery, the batsman set to join fellow young stars already training at the facility

“They’ll be hitting the gym pretty hard to get their bodies in shape for next season.” Silk said, referring to the bevy of young cricketers already in Brisbane.

“By the time I get up there, I’ll probably miss all that.

“I’ll just be looking at doing some training – more outside stuff.

“I’m just looking forward to getting back on the field and playing again.”

Having taken one of the catches of the year himself, all the down-time has also afforded the young batsman time to keep tabs on the fielding efforts of the Australians currently playing in the IPL.

“I’ve been trying to catch up on all the highlights and I have seen most of those catches,” Silk said.

“Steve Smith’s catch was brilliant as well as Chris Lynn’s catch.

“Very good catches, but also very different to the one I was fortunate to take a few months ago.”
