Silk set to return to Tasmania training

Tigers batsman likely to be back in the nets soon after pulling out for one-day tournament for personal reasons

Tasmania batsman Jordan Silk is expected to return to training after an absence that ruled him out of this month's Matador BBQs One-Day Cup.

Cricket Tasmaniaissued a brief statement two weeks ago saying that a "personal matter" meant the 23-year-old would not be seeking a place in the one-day squad.

Chairman of selectors Michael Farrell did not answer questions about Silk, but on Friday Tigers' captain George Bailey said the right-hander would soon return to the nets.

"Silky I think is resuming training with Tasmania shortly," Bailey told reporters.

"Hopefully he just freshens up and feels good about his cricket going forward."

Bailey described Sydney-born Silk as a "great contributor" in the short-form game, adding he would be missed in the one-day competition.

Since his first-class debut in the summer of 2012-13, Silk has emerged as one of Australia's most promising young batsmen, having scored a century in that season's Sheffield Shield final and earning the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year award in January 2014.

He also enjoyed a breakout T20 season in last year's KFC Big Bash League with the Sydney Sixers, and has been widely touted as a future international.

Fellow Tasmanian Ricky Ponting labelled Silk "the best fieldsman in the country" and the 23-year-old has provided a catalogue of spectacular moments in the field in all formats - none better than his remarkable catch for the Sixers in BBL|03 that instantly went viral across the cricket world.

He backed that up in BBL|04 with another stunning grab in the outfield.

Tasmania had a disappointing campaign in last year's Matador Cup, winning just twice as they finished fourth, but paceman Jackson Bird says the squad is expecting a reversal of fortunes this time around.

"Having (James) Faulkner and 'Fek' (Andrew Fekete) back is great for us, and we've recruited really well as well," Bird told cricket.com.au.

"Some of the younger blokes are pushing us older blokes to get the best out of ourselves, and now the playing group is just really excited to get underway and have a much better season than we did last year, because we know we can play a lot better than what we did."
