Silk withdraws from Matador Cup

Tasmania batsman cites 'personal reasons' as he pulls out of one-day tournament

Tasmania batsman Jordan Silk has made himself unavailable for selection in the forthcoming Matador One-Day Cup competition.

Cricket Tasmania released a statement today, saying Silk would not be taking part in the competition due to "personal reasons".

"Cricket Tasmania would like to advise that Tasmanian Tigers’ batsman Jordan Silk will not be available for selection in the upcoming Matador BBQs One-Day Cup squad due to personal reasons," the statement read.

"We will not be making any further comment on the above and we ask that you please respect Jordan’s privacy during this time.

"The squad for the tournament is expected to be announced early next week."

Since his first-class debut in the summer of 2012-13, Silk has emerged as one of Australia's most promising young batsmen, having scored a century in that season's Sheffield Shield final and earning the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year award in January 2014.

He also enjoyed a breakout T20 season in last year's KFC Big Bash League with the Sydney Sixers, and has been widely touted as a future international.

Fellow Tasmanian Ricky Ponting labelled Silk "the best fieldsman in the country" and the 23-year-old has provided a catalogue of spectacular moments in the field in all formats - none better than his remarkable catch for the Sixers in BBL|03 that instantly went viral across the cricket world.

Seven Matador Cup squads will be announced throughout next week ahead of the tournament's opening day on Monday, October 5, with the introduction this year of the Cricket Australia XI - a concept designed to give fringe first-class players and talented rookies an early opportunity to compete against the country's best cricketers.

Quick Single: Mystery surrounds CA XI selection

Once the six states have announced their 14-man squads, they will then be asked to nominate remaining players within their system who they feel should be considered for selection in the CA XI, effectively forming a 'best of the rest' team from around the country.
