Aussie great inducted into Hall of Fame

Former Australia skipper Karen Rolton honoured in ceremony during Adelaide Test

Former Australia women’s captain Karen Rolton has become just the sixth woman to be inducted into the International Cricket Council's Hall of Fame.

Rolton was presented with a personalised cap by ICC chief David Richardson during a presentation on the opening day of the Third Commonwealth Bank Test in Adelaide, with Cricket Australia chairman David Peever also in attendance.

She is the 81st player and just the sixth woman to receive the accolade.

"It’s with great honour that I accept this award of being inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame," Rolton said.

"To be acknowledged like this is something that I never expected and am truly grateful to be listed amongst some of my all-time cricketing heroes.

"Cricket has been a part of my life since I can remember. From growing up in Adelaide and playing backyard cricket with my brother to captaining my state and country. It’s been a childhood dream and one that I’m grateful for.

"I’d like to thank Cricket Australia, my teammates over the years and most importantly my parents for supporting me playing cricket as a junior and right until the end of my career.

"Finally, thank you to the ICC for inducting me into the Hall of Fame and your ongoing support of women’s cricket."

Rolton played 14 Tests and 141 one-day internationals for Australia between 1995 and 2009, scoring more than 5800 runs and scoring 10 centuries.

A two-time World Cup winner (in 1997 and 2005), she's remains the only woman to score a century in a World Cup final having posted 107 in the 2005 decider against India in Centurion.

Richardson praised Rolton as a pioneer for women's cricket.

"With increased investment, women’s cricket has grown rapidly over the past few years but it is through the exploits and example set by players like Karen that young women and girls are inspired to take up the game," he said.

Raw vision: Australia handed Championship trophy

"We congratulate Karen on behalf of the ICC for her successful career and for this well-deserved award."

Rolton is first of the four legendary cricketers who will be formally inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame this season; Australian Arthur Morris, England's George Lohmann and Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralidaran will also be inducted.
