Pollard's next level silent protest

West Indian responds to umpire request to quell on-field chatter during Indian Premier League match

Kieron Pollard has responded to an umpire's request to quell his on-field chatter by covering his own mouth with strapping tape.

Playing for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, Pollard drew the ire of Umpire Richard Illingsworth after an extended exchange with Royal Challengers Bangalore batsman and fellow West Indian Chris Gayle.

Gayle had started slowly in Bangalore's chase of an imposing 210 for victory and Pollard was no doubt reminding the powerful left-hander that the required run rate was increasing with every dot ball.

Pollard's decision to engage his former international teammate came as Gayle played out a maiden over from Indians bowler Lasith Malinga. He was eventually dismissed for 10 off 24 balls.

Illingsworth had words with Pollard after the incident, which didn't seem to please the West Indian, and a few overs later the player was spotted in the infield with tape plastered over his mouth.

It drew cheers and laughter from the crowd at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium and a few wry smiles from those on the Mumbai bench, including coach Ricky Ponting.

The big-screen attendant at the ground even flashed a 'Quiet Please' message on the screen, much to the delight of the crowd.

With tape still in place, Pollard then had a conversation with Illingsworth's partner Umpire Vineet Kulkarni.

Pollard was dismissed for 5 off 3 balls and bowled one wicketless over in Mumbai's 18-run victory, their first of the tournament.
