Rahul's return puts Gambhir on notice

India have recalled KL Rahul for the second Test against England after his recovery from injury

India received a boost on Tuesday with the news that opener Lokesh Rahul has recovered from injury and is in contention to face England in this week's second Test.

Rahul, who made his Test debut against Australia two summers ago, already has three Test centuries to his name from nine matches.

The right-hander missed India's opening Test against England in Rajkot with a hamstring injury and his return to the squad puts recently recalled opener Gautam Gambhir's spot at the top of the order in doubt.

"Rahul has fully recovered from his right hamstring injury and would be joining the squad today," the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement.

The series-opener against England finished in a tense draw, with India holding on with four wickets in hand chasing 310 in the fourth-innings when stumps were called on day five.

Gambhir managed 29 in the first innings before seamer Chris Woakes removed him a duck in the second innings.

The 35-year-old, who averages just under 42 from 58 Tests, is trying to re-establish himself in the Test side after two years in the international wilderness.

The second of the five-Test series starts in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.
