Sri Lanka legend agrees to one-year deal with Surrey for the 2017 County Championship season

Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara is set to play another season of first-class cricket, having agreed to a one-year contract with his current county side Surrey.

Sangakkara, who retired from all international cricket in August 2015 after playing his 134th Test, has been in fine form for Surrey through the 2016 northern summer, making 1,039 runs at 49.47 with a century and seven fifties.

Surrey finished the County Championship season in fifth position, while they also made they final of the one-day domestic tournament played out last week against Warwickshire, in which Sangakkara contributed 21.

The 38-year-old played seven one-day matches for the county and averaged 46.33, the standout knock an unbeaten 130 that included this audacious shot (below) in the final over as he helped Surrey to a stunning win.

In the T20 format, Sangakkara blasted 227 runs at a strike-rate of 165.69, with a pair of half-centuries, including a top score of 72.

The left-hander, who signed off from ODI cricket by leaving an indelible impression on Australian cricket fans with four straight hundreds at the 2015 World Cup, will again return Down Under this summer with the Hobart Hurricanes in the KFC Big Bash, where he will be joined for the first time by Englishman Stuart Broad.
