'Superman' Stoinis confident cape still fits

Powerful allrounder believes he can put Shield struggles behind him and channel his NZ ODI heroics in India

Victoria allrounder Marcus Stoinis has dismissed concerns over his recent batting form and declared he's ready to make his Test debut in Australia's gripping series against India.

Stoinis has been added to Australia's Test squad for the first time, summoned to India after Mitch Marsh was ruled out of the final two matches with a shoulder injury.

The right-hander has struggled in the Sheffield Shield this season, scoring just 172 runs at an average of 15.63 and has picked up eight wickets at 39.50 in seven matches.

But selectors were wooed by his heroic unbeaten one-day knock of 146 at Eden Park during Australia's one-day international tour of New Zealand last month. He was comfortably Australia's best and most consistent performer during that series.

Maximum Marcus Stoinis smashes 11 sixes

The seam-bowling allrounder took apart an attack featuring Tim Southee and Trent Boult, breaking all manner of records as he belted 11 sixes and almost snatched a come-from-behind victory, prompting NZ coach Mike Hesson to liken the 27-year-old to Superman.

Stoinis, who will join the squad at the conclusion of the Bushrangers' ongoing match against Western Australia in Alice Springs, has no qualms with his recent Shield tallies, saying it wasn't indicative of what he could produce.

"I feel fine, there's no such thing as form really," he said.

"I went in and made a hundred for Australia recently and hadn't made many runs before that."

Super Stoinis sets new all-round benchmark

Glenn Maxwell and Usman Khawaja are considered the frontrunners to claim the vacant spot in the XI, but selectors may opt to present Stoinis with a baggy green next Thursday.

Stoinis believes his selection would depend on what team balance selectors were looking for but said making a Test debut in India with the series in the balance would be extra special.

"It's an exciting opportunity," Stoinis said.

"Every young cricketer dreams of making a Test debut but in a series like this, in India where it's 1-1, and you've got really good chance to step up and show your stuff.

"Hopefully I can impact the game and help the team win."

The call-up comes more than five years after Stoinis left Perth to play grade cricket in Melbourne in a bid to reignite his stuttering career after being discarded by Western Australia.

Coach Darren Lehmann was full of praise for him following the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy series, having been suitably impressed with Stoinis' composure and clean striking.

Kohli claims go against our grain: Lehmann

"We've seen it in one-day cricket, that he's got the power. It was just the belief for him," Lehmann said last month.

"Now he's got that belief, the world's his oyster, so it's up to him to keep kicking goals and away he goes."

Victoria teammate Peter Handscomb, speaking during the previous summer while selectors were mulling which allrounder to add to the squad for the Boxing Day Test, declared Stoinis was "definitely ready".

"Marcus is definitely ready, he's been doing a lot of work behind the scenes in terms of getting himself right, getting his body right, but also mentally preparing his own game, ready for that next level," Handscomb said at the time.

"He's doing a great job and he has been doing an amazing job for Victoria now for the last couple of years."
