Stoinis ton not enough against NSW

Victorian allrounder smacks impressive century against strong Blues side, but NSW win warm-up match by four wickets

NSW Blues have overcome a rapid century from Marcus Stoinis to record a narrow four-wicket win in their Matador BBQ's One-Day Cup warm-up match against the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers in Sydney.

The Blues reached their victory target of 272 with just two balls to spare thanks to half-centuries from Ed Cowan, Nic Maddinson and Australia captain Steve Smith.

Stoinis, who made his international debut on the limited overs leg of Australia's Tour of the British Isles, had earlier smashed 129 from 117 deliveries in Victoria's total of 8-271.

The 26-year-old's innings came against a Test quality Blues attack featuring the likes of Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Steve O'Keefe, Moises Henriques and Sean Abbott.

He and Australia opener Aaron Finch (66 from 82 balls) had given the Bushrangers the perfect start to their innings after Lyon had claimed the early wicket of Rob Quiney for 17.

Stoinis took control of the innings after Finch was removed by Henriques, reaching his century from 99 balls, before accelerating late in the innings.

Incredibly, Starc finished the innings with a double wicket-maiden and Maddinson and Cowan got off to a flying start in the run chase.

The left-handed duo put on 103 in 19 overs before spinner John Holland had Maddinson (61 from 57) caught on the boundary, one of three wickets to the left-armer.

Cowan too fell to Holland for 76 from 88 balls to leave the home side requiring 107 from the final 20 overs.

Smith helped reduce the equation to 48 from 10 with a brisk half-century before he was bowled by a Clint McKay slower ball for 56.

Scott Boland then picked up the wickets of Henriques and Abbott to give the Victorians a chance, but the Blues snuck home in the final over.

The Blues open their Matador Cup campaign against the CA XI at Bankstown on Monday before the Bushrangers take on the same opposition in their tournament opener two days later.
