Bulls player says he feels privileged to field for his country

Before we begin to re-tell the tale of Marnus Labuschagne's spectacular one-handed grab yesterday, let's clear something up; his surname is pronounced Lab-er-shane.

The South African-born 20-year-old has had to clarify the pronunciation of his name several times over the past 24 hours after he pocketed a fantastic catch at short leg on day two of the second Commonwealth Bank Test at the Gabba.

The Queensland opening batsman was told last week that he would be a substitute fielder for this match and as Australia's fast bowlers wilted in the Brisbane heat, he found himself under the lid at short leg in a Test match for his country.

But Labuschagne wasn't just there to make up the numbers and he proved his worth with a stunning diving catch to dismiss Indian tailender Varun Aaron.

It's a skill that he has honed playing for the Bulls in the Bupa Sheffield Shield this season - and also in the kitchen.

Just moments after the wicket yesterday, a video from earlier this month emerged of Labuschagne taking a similar catch in his home, with a piece of corn in place of a cricket ball.

"Me and my mate were just mucking around, actually cutting corn properly, and we thought 'surely we could do a little segment'," Labuschagne told cricket.com.au.

"So we had a little bit of fun with it and all of a sudden it's all over the place."

While he hasn't yet been given the honour of wearing the Baggy Green cap, the right-hander is aware of how fortunate he is to represent his country at the highest level.

"I'm very privileged," he said.

"There's not many people that get selected to be a sub fielder.

"It's such a great opportunity and amazing that I get the field for my country."
