Australia A romp to 10-wicket win

Sandhu takes four wickets with spin before Bancroft and Khawaja make light work of small target in Chennai

The off-spin of NSW paceman Gurinder Sandhu has guided Australia A to an impressive 10-wicket win on the fourth morning of their match against India A in Chennai.

With India starting the day 51 runs in front with four wickets remaining, Sandhu (4-76) took three wickets in 10 balls in a stunning spell early on.

Shreyas Gopal departed for a duck to a sharp catch from Bancroft close in, which triggered a collapse in the tail before Steve O'Keefe (4-88) picked up the final wicket to end India A's second innings at 274, a lead of just 60.

First-innings centurion Cameron Bancroft and skipper Usman Khawaja made light work of the small run chase, blasting 62 from just 6.1 overs to secure a comprehensive victory.

The home side had started the day on 6-265 after the tourists took a massive 214-run lead on the first innings.

Australia A's first innings ended early on day three on 349, of which Bancroft contributed 150. India A had been bowled out for just 135 in their first innings having won the toss and elected to bat first.

Sandhu was pleased with his contribution, but insisted pace bowling remains his main focus.

"It's just something that if the conditions are helping a little bit or there's a big partnership or if the captain needs to try something different which may bring up a wicket," Sandhu said.

"Then I'm happy to put my hand up and say 'I'll give you an over or two'.

"But I'm going to keep bowling pace and that will be my main focus."

Khawaja said he was "very happy" with the breakthrough win after years of Australian disappointment on Indian soil.

"I tried to take the pressure off the boys and not focus on the win too much, but we came here to win this series," Khawaja said.

"I haven't been involved in Australian team that has come to India and won a four-day game so it's huge.

"And we won it with ten wickets to spare so it wasnt just a win. It was a really good win."

The first four-day match between the two A sides ended in a draw.

Australia A will head into a one-day tri-series with India A and South Africa A in Chennai, starting on Wednesday.
