Khawaja, Burns post tons in Aus A rout

Openers blast centuries and Adam Zampa takes four as Australia A thump India A by 119 runs in Chennai

Centuries from opening batsmen Usman Khawaja and Joe Burns and four wickets to young leg-spinner Adam Zampa and Gurinder Sandhu have helped Australia A to a thumping 119-run victory over India A in their second 50-over tri-series match in Chennai.

After winning the toss, skipper Khawaja and fellow Queensland Bulls batsman Burns took the India A bowlers to task as Australia A raced to 4-334 off their 50 overs.

The opening combination, who have both played Test cricket for Australia, put on 239 in 35 overs.

Watch: Burns and Khawaja smash India A's attack

Burns rode his luck early. A difficult chance was put down by the man running backwards with the flight of the ball at long-on when Burns was just on seven, and a top edge from an attempted cut-shot on 15 was put down by India A's wicketkeeper, Sanju Samson.

Sensing it was his day, Burns unleashed with an impressive display of six hitting. By the time the dust had settled on his innings, he had cleared the pickets at Chennai's Chepauk Stadium an impressive 14 times.

Unsurprisingly, Burns reached the triple-figures milestone first. Just as unsurprising on this day was that he did it with a monster six straight down the ground.

Khawaja was not far behind in bringing up his run-a-ball century - he had hit 10 fours and three sixes – but was out shortly after.

Attempting to strike off-spinner Karun Nair for a six, Khawaja was caught on the long-on fence for an even 100 from 104 balls.

South Australian Travis Head, who had sat watching for nearly 36 overs, sadly lasted just two balls. Slashing at a wide ball he was well caught by Samson.

Undeterred by the double blow, Burns powered on, striking an impressive 14 sixes and five fours on his way to raising his bat for 150.

He eventually fell for 154 off 131 balls, a new career high in List A cricket. Attempting to loft a 15th six, a top edge skied high in the air and was caught by Sandeep Sharma at short fine leg off Dhuwal Kulkarni, having helped Australia A to 3-276 from 42.3 overs.

Handy contributions from the unbeaten batsmen Matthew Wade (34 not out off 21), Callum Ferguson (18 not out off 20) followed a quick cameo from Chris Lynn (16 off 22) that helped the tourists to an impressive 4-334.

India A's leg-spinner Karn Sharma (0-58 off five overs) and off-spinner Parvez Rasool (0-57 off seven) bore the brunt of the Burns and Khawaja partnership, but Australia's leggie Adam Zampa proved a handful for the batsmen on their home turf.

James Pattinson, playing his second straight game in his return from remodelling and strengthening his action, picked up the early wicket of Mayank Agarwal, caught at backward point by Lynn for 10, but also took stick; his seven overs cost a touch over seven each.

Sean Abbott continued his solid work on this tour, picking up Manish Pandey (11) to keep the home side pegged back.

Sandhu had the dangerous Karun Nair (6) caught by Lynn while opener Unmukt Chand had brought up his half-century by launching the full toss that was Zampa's first delivery for six.

Five balls later, the bowler had the last laugh, sliding a top-spinner through his defences to send India A's skipper back for 52 from 47 balls.

Kedar Jadhav had reached 50 before he advanced down the wicket in an attempt to loft Zampa for a six, only to find substitute fielder Peter Handscomb taking a nice leaping catch.

Zampa also beat Parvez Rasool who had advanced so far down the pitch Matthew Wade had time to regather his initial fumble and still complete a stumping.

With the target beyond them, India A still threw the bat. Pattinson had dropped a catch at long off to rob Zampa of a wicket, but he more than made up for it with a great diving effort to take the final wicket of Dhawal Kulkarni for Sandu's fourth.

With two victories in the tri-series, Australia A play their next match, against South Africa A, on Monday again in Chennai.
