Tamim, De Kock clash on day two

Home side works towards building a first innings lead amid a slight drama in Chittagong

Rain brought an early end to Wednesday's second day's play in the first Test with Bangladesh in a strong position against South Africa in Chittagong, while opener Tamim Iqbal and Proteas ‘keeper Quinton De Kock may come under scrutiny for an altercation.

Bangladesh, replying to South Africa's 248, were 4-179 in their first innings when rain stopped play for a second time moments after the game resumed at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in the third session.

The home side trail the Proteas by just 69 runs with six wickets in hand.

Bangladesh began their response impressively, Tamim scoring 57 and Mahmudullah making 67.

Captain Mushfiqur Rahim is not out 16, with Shakib Al Hasan on one.

Match officials called off play with 25 overs left in the day after an earlier incident between Tamim and De Kock was caught by the cameras.

The fracas occurred as players from both sides left the field for lunch, with a conversation between the pair resulting in contact being made.

Hashim Amla soon turned peace-maker, although it's likely the match referee will assess the vision to determine whether any code of conduct sanctions need to be imposed.

Tamim was recently involved in an incident during the second ODI against the Proteas, with South Africa's Rilee Roussow fined 50 per cent of his match fee for 'inappropriate and deliberate' contact he made after the Bangladesh opener was dismissed.

Day one: Mustafizur stuns Proteas on debut

South Africa's bowling coach Charl Langeveldt believes Bangladesh have a slight advantage in the game.

"I think it is 60-40 in their side," he said after stumps. "The game is fairly even. If they get a 100-run lead against us, we will be struggling.

"Bangladesh really batted well. They were patient. Normally they have the second highest scoring rate. I think our guys bowled really well and Bangladesh batted well."

Bangladesh's Mahmudullah said the third day's opening session would be crucial for both the teams.

"I think if we can spend first session tomorrow without losing any wicket we will be in the driving seat," he said. "Anything close to 400 runs will be good score in this wicket."

The second and final Test will be in Dhaka from July 30-August 3.

After snaring 11 wickets in his first two ODIs, 19-year-old Mustafizur Rahim has delivered with the red ball in Chittagong
