Stunning cameo hands Trinbago CPL title

Kevon Cooper was the hero for Trinbago in a thrilling end to an action-packed CPL final

A stunning cameo from Kevon Cooper has secured Trinbago Knight Riders the 2017 Caribbean Premier League title.

Needing 22 to win from two overs, Cooper smashed Australian Ben Hilfenhaus for a six and two fours in three consecutive deliveries to stampede to a three-wicket victory with six balls to spare.

The Patriots restricted St Kitts and Nevis Patriots to 6-135 from their 20 overs due in large to Sunil Narine’s mesmerizing four-over spell of 1-8.

Late hitting from Carlos Brathwaite (30 from 25 balls) and Mohammad Nabi (18 from 5) lifted the Patriots, and when Trinbago slumped to 7-90 it looked like there total might be enough.

But that’s when Cooper and Dinesh Ramdin combined for an unbeaten 46-run stand from 29 balls to send the crowd at the Brian Lara Stadium berserk.

Cooper finished with 29 from 14 balls, a knock that featured two fours and two sixes.

While the Knight Riders, who feature Australian allrounder Dan Christian and coach Simon Katich, will celebrate long into the night, Patriots spinner Tabraiz Shamsi will likely find himself in hot water after an overzealous appeal in the 13th over.

Shamsi was adamant he had allrounder Javon Searles trapped lbw and when the umpire turned him down, the South African was animated in his disappointment.
