CA XI crush SA in JLT Cup opener

Young guns shock South Australia with a stunning performance in the One-Day Cup

Cricket Australia XI captain Beau Webster and opener Jake Carder scored centuries to take the development side to a crushing seven-wicket defeat of South Australia in Wednesday's one-day cup opener in Brisbane.

The CA XI went winless through last season's tournament and won just once in their debut campaign, but showed no signs of nerves in powering to a comfortable victory under gloomy skies at Allan Border Field.

CA XI quicks run riot on Redbacks

Webster scored all around the wicket on his way to 121, while West Australian left-hander Carder (102) pulled and drove with authority in a 229-run partnership, as CA XI passed the Redbacks' 254 with 21 balls remaining.

South Australia slumped to 5-51 after being sent in on an overcast morning and lost three wickets in the first three overs.

Batting at No.7, Cameron Valente (100) started slowly before exploding alongside Joe Mennie (43 no) to give the Redbacks a defendable total after Jackson Coleman (4-46) did the early damage.

Webster dominates for CA XI

"It was good to send the SACAs in on a bowler-friendly wicket early, we bowled well early and it was nice to bat out there later," Webster said.

"Jake put the foot on the throat; he really took the bowlers on."

Not picked for Tasmania, Webster showed his all-round ability earlier in the day by chipping in with 0-25 from 10 overs of tidy offspin.

"There was initial disappointment there (missing Tasmanian selection) but, once I got over that and saw the opportunity to bat high in the order, I was really looking forward to it," he said.

The CA XI next play Queensland in Brisbane on Friday, when Western Australia open their account against defending champions NSW at the WACA.
