Tim causes a ton of Paine for CA XI

Tasmania claim a bonus point after marching to victory by eight wickets over the Cricket Australia XI

A century from Tim Paine has helped Tasmania surge to a bonus-point victory over the Cricket Australia XI in the Matador BBQs One-Day Cup at Allan Border Field in Brisbane.

Chasing 237 to win after Xavier Doherty (3-35) did much of the early damage with the ball, Tasmania marched to victory with eight wickets in hand, Paine not out 101 and Dom Michael also making a strong contribution with 83.

Needing to win inside 40 overs to secure a bonus point, Paine paced his innings perfectly, moving to a century and hitting the winning runs with the same boundary over midwicket after 39.3 overs.

It was 31-year-old Paine's eighth List A hundred, made after he'd showed strong signs of form with 34 from 38 in the Tigers' opening match defeat to Queensland.

Earlier, some impressive lower-order hitting helped the Cricket Australia XI recover from a perilous position to reach 9-236.

James Bazley (45) and Matthew Short (32) led the fightback with a sixth-wicket stand of 60 after the development side had slipped to 5-89 in the 22nd over.

Left-arm orthodox spinner Doherty impressed, while former Bulls leg-spinner Cameron Boyce enjoyed familiar conditions, chiming in with 2-51.

Tail-end pair Liam Hatcher (31) and Tom O’Donnell (28no) put together 56 for the ninth wicket to help the young side to a more respectable total.

The early run-out of Ben Dunk (26 off 20) aside, the CA XI were unable to make any real inroads into the Tigers order, Paine and Alex Doolan (23) unbeaten at the end consigning themselves to a second-straight defeat after a first-up loss to the Bulls last Saturday.

Last year, the CA XI caused one of the upsets of the tournament when they defeated Tasmania by three runs at Bankstown Oval.
