Wizard Warner blasts epic IPL ton

David Warner explodes with 43-ball century to lead Sunrisers in demolition job of Kolkata

The result: Sunrisers Hyderabad 3-209 (Warner 126, Williamson 40) defeated Kolkata Knight Riders 7-161 (Uthappa 53, Kumar 2-29) by 48 runs

Match in a tweet: David Warner goes ballistic with sensational 43-ball century to blow Kolkata out of the water

The hero: Warner has been in great touch throughout the this IPL but he took it to a new level against the top team in the competititon. Kolkata bowlers had no answer for the Australia opener, who raced out of the blocks and never looked back. A slice of luck when he was just 13 as a top edge went over the top of the back-peddaling Chris Woakes, whose dive saw the ball bounce just out of his reach. Warner's first 50 came in just 20 balls with four sixes and four boundaries. Another intervention from Woakes, who was in from the long-off boundary just a fraction too far, and palmed Warner's lofted drive over the rope when a catch was possible. Nevertheless, it was only 23 balls for Warner to move from 50 to 100, Woakes assist one of another four sixes deposited over the fence, to go with three more boundaries. The carnage was eventually halted on 126 when he Woakes had an overdue measure of revenge, as Warner mistimed another booming drive and sliced a top edge for Gautam Gambhir to catch. It was Warner's third IPL century, but his first since 2012, and the celebration showed how pumped up his way. Having blasted 4-6-6 to move to 98, he scampered a quick two for the milestone. His follow through and trademark leaping celebration took him all the way out to the 30-yard fielding restrictions circle. Ricky Ponting's pre-tournament prediction for Warner to be player of the tournament is looking better by the day.

The support act: The Sunrisers already had 171 by the time Warner departed, which proved to be more than enough. But just for good measure, Kiwi captain Kane Williamson showed why classical style never goes out of fashion no matter the format, with another breezy innings. Williamson had stroked his way to 40 from 25, run out on the final ball of the innings.

The consolation effort: Kolkata No.3 Robin Uthappa chimed in with 53 in response, hitting four sixes and four boundaries in a 28-ball knock, to lead the Knight Riders' response. But it wasn't enough and Kolkata continued to lose wickets at regular intervals to make this a one-sided contest. Uthappa's knock moved him into third on the season's run-scorers list, and at 384, he is just three behind his captain Gautam Gambhir. Both are a long way behind Orange Cap holder Warner, who has 459 this season.

The Aussie pack: Warner's fireworks left Sunrisers teammate Moises Henriques unused with the bat, but it wasn't a good night for any Aussie with the ball. Henriques three overs went for 31 while for Kolkata, Nathan Coulter-Nile was always going to be in for some punishment opening the bowling against Warner's blitz. He escaped with a very respectable 0-34 from the four overs and continues to impress on his comeback from injury.

The leaderboard: Kolkata hold top spot, but only narrowly, tied on points with the Mumbai Indians who have a game in hand. Warner's Sunrisers are just a point further back

The wash-up: Sunrisers next play on Wednesday night, against the Delhi Daredevils, who were absolutely thumped in Sunday night's other match. Kolkata will regroup and return home to lick their wounds before hosting Steve Smith and the Rising Pune Supergiant franchise on Thursday.
