India thrash Kiwis in 500th Test

Ashwin and Shami close out contest after lunch on day five despite Santner's impressive resistance

India have completed a comprehensive 197-run victory over New Zealand in the first Test in Kanpur.

Off-spinner Ravi Ashwin claimed 6-132 on the final day to finish with 10 for the match, as New Zealand were bundled out for 236.

Allrounder Mitch Santner offered admirable resistance for the tourists, his 71 seeing the contest drag beyond lunch, while Luke Ronchi took the fight to the hosts, making 80 from 120 balls with nine fours and a six.

Quick Single: Ashwin falls just short of Grimmett's record

The Black Caps, who resumed on 4-93 after being set an unlikely 434 for victory, lost three more wickets during a tough morning session at Kanpur's Green Park stadium, the venue for India's historic 500th Test.

A 102-run partnership between overnight batsmen Ronchi and Santner helped New Zealand fight in the first hour of play on the fifth day.

But left-arm spinnner Ravindra Jadeja, who registered a five-wicket haul in the first innings, managed to break their stand when Ronchi mistimed a flatter delivery and was caught at point by Ravichandran Ashwin.

Shami inches away from Test hat-trick

Pace spearhead Mohammed Shami also claimed two wickets in the morning session, including wicketkeeper-batsman BJ Watling, and narrowly missed a hat-trick during a fine display of swing bowling.

Ashwin quickly went to work after lunch, removing Santner and tailenders Ish Sodhi (17) and Neil Wagner (0) to complete a famous victory for the home side.
