Brisbane triumph in Shield for Bulls

The Bulls left it late in defeating the Redbacks at the Gabba

Queensland have defeated South Australia by 128 runs in their Sheffield Shield clash at the Gabba on Sunday.

Shield leaders Redbacks were bowled out for 317 chasing 446 for victory late on the final day.

Opener Jake Weatherald (73) top scored for South Australia while Ben Cutting took 3-60 for the Bulls who earned their first Shield win of the season in their third match.

The Bulls secured the last gasp result with 12 balls left in the day when spinner Jason Floros (3-65) bowled Test recall Chadd Sayers for 22.

The swing bowler was the only South Australian called up for the third Test against South Africa in Adelaide after Redbacks teammates Callum Ferguson, Travis Head and Jake Lehmann all failed to impress with the bat in Brisbane.

Incumbent Australia No.6 Ferguson had already squandered his last chance to impress national selectors, out for four in his second dig on Saturday.

However, Queensland's England-born Matt Renshaw earned a baggy green for the pink ball Test - albeit at the expense of his Bulls opening partner Joe Burns.

Renshaw, 20, hit 108 and a quick-fire 50 for the Bulls at the Gabba.

But Burns failed again in the Shield clash against South Australia.

In his last six first class knocks, he has amassed just 18 runs at an average of three.

Burns and Ferguson needed runs - and plenty of them - after all incumbent Australian batsmen were sent back to Shield duty this week following their second Test thrashing in Hobart.
