Australia A storm to series sweep over SA

Hosts thump South Africa A by 10 wickets on final day in Townsville

Queensland spinner Mitchell Swepson was the star of day four as Australia A beat South Africa A by 10 wickets to sweep the two-match series in Townsville.

Swepson claimed 4-33 on the final day to help dismiss the tourists for 180, leaving just 83 for the hosts to chase after tea at Tony Ireland Stadium.

Australia A openers Kurtis Patterson (50no) and Cameron Bancroft (32no) reeled in the target inside 15 overs.

The win comes a week after Peter Handscomb's charges won the first four-day match by 197 runs at Brisbane's Allan Border Field, the first match of the Australia A Winter series, which now moves to the quadrangular limited-overs series featuring these two sides, India A and the Cricket Australia National Performance Squad.

Highlights: Australia A sweep South Africa A

Swepson, who claimed 3-55 in the visitors' first innings, struck with his first ball of the day, though it was hardly the way the leggie would have imagined it - Dane Vilas (36) swatting a rank long-hop to Chris Tremain at mid-off who completed the catch with two hands fully extended overhead.

The 22-year-old went the other way with his second dismissal, striking Andile Phehlukwayo on the full from around the wicket, trapping the left-hander lbw for 27.

Swepson wrapped up the innings in consecutive deliveries; the first a brilliant wrong'un which bowled Hardus Viljoen without playing a shot, and Duanne Olivier caught at bat-pad first ball to set the hosts a modest target on pitch that was still playing fair.

Swepson's four seals South Africa A's fate

Earlier, Victorian allrounder Marcus Stoinis claimed 2-3 in a four-over burst to give Australia A a sniff of victory.

Entering the day at 1-18, South Africa A made a cautious start against a red Kookaburra ball only nine overs old.

Dean Elgar (35) and Omphile Romela (25) added 47 for the second wicket before paceman Scott Boland broke the deadlock an hour into the first session.

Romela had been patient against the probing 'A' attack, but a rush of blood had the left-hander miscuing a hook shot off Boland to the waiting hands of Swepson at mid-wicket.

Elgar, a veteran of 25 Tests for the Proteas, looked largely untroubled on the placid pitch, handsomely on-driving speedster Tremain and new Sydney Sixers recruit Joe Mennie for the only boundaries of the morning.

Handscomb century powers Australia A

The introduction of Stoinis proved a masterstroke by captain Handsomb.

The allrounder attacked the left-handed Elgar from around the wicket, finding a nagging line outside off-stump which continually asked questions of the batsman.

Stoinis's patience paid off when Elgar played at one he should have left, edging behind to wicketkeeper Sam Whiteman who made no mistake to send the opener on his way.

Stonis added Temba Bavuma (4) to his wicket tally in the last over before lunch.

The broad-shouldered right-armer got a delivery to lift and jag back in towards Bavuma, take the glove and balloon to Kurtis Patterson at gully.

Glenn Maxwell chipped in with the wicket of Stiaan van Zyl (14) after the main break before Stoinis returned to claim his third scalp of the day - Wayne Parnell (22)  guiding a short ball to Patterson at gully.

Enter Swepson, who claimed the final three wickets of the innings in the 72nd over and set up an easy chase for his top-order batsmen.
