Might of Mumbai too much for Delhi

Cummins, Johnson impress with the ball as ladder-leaders spark disastrous Daredevils collapse in low-scoring affair

The result: Mumbai Indians 8-142 (Buttler 28, Mishra 2-18, Cummins 2-20) defeated Delhi Daredevils (Morris 52*, Rabada 44, McClenaghan 3-24, Bumrah 2-21) by 14 runs.

The match in a tweet: Mumbai's mighty bowlers help ladder-leaders pick up win No.6 despite Protea-led lower-order fightback

The collapse: Mitchell Johnson came in for his first game and was excellent in conceding just 23 from his four overs, but it was fellow left-armer Mitchell McClenaghan along with Indians (in both nationality and IPL allegiance) Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya who struck early and often for Mumbai. After an early run-out, the trio claimed five more wickets between them in Delhi's opening seven overs, effectively nixing the Daredevils hopes of victory.

Buttler blast: While his cameo didn't even last 'til the end of the powerplay, Jos Buttler's 18-ball 28 proved the difference in a low-scoring affair. The highly-rated Englishman crunched three fours and a couple of sixes in his whirlwind knock and looked to have the hosts on track on for a big total. While that never eventuated, Buttler had top-scored as Mumbai stuttered to 142 from their allocated 20 overs, a sub-par total that proved enough.

Protea punch: Australian fans witnessed first-hand last summer the mesmerising force of young paceman Kagiso Rabada. But a few eyebrows would have been raised when the prodigious quick, on IPL debut, batted at No.7 ahead of the in-form Chris Morris and talented tail-ender Pat Cummins. It mattered little as Morris joined his countryman at 6-24 with Rabada still new to the crease and the Delhi chase in tatters. The pair, who'd earlier opened the bowling together, salvaged some pride by putting on 91, the second highest seventh-wicket partnership ever in the IPL, Rabada departing in the penultimate over for 44 while Morris remained unbeaten on 52.

The Aussie pack: Johnson was miserly in his first game of IPL10 but it was Cummins who was the most impressive of the men from Down Under. The right-armer collected two vital wickets, firstly having Nitish Rana – second only to David Warner on this year's leading run-scoring list – caught on the fence before returning at the death to remove the dangerous Kieron Pollard with a slower ball.

The wash-up: The Daredevils are still looking for the right combination, having changed their XI for all six of their games this year, a trend that's continued from the previous season. They don't play again until Friday, when they face Kolkata in Mohali. The show rolls on for Mumbai, who face Steve Smith's Pune at home again on Monday.
