Trott fires Warwickshire to One-Day Cup title

Surrey 'embarrassed' by heavy defeat to Warwickshire as Jonathan Trott thrives at Lord's

Former England batsman Jonathan Trott scored an unbeaten 82 off 100 balls as Warwickshire crushed Surrey by eight wickets in England's One-Day Cup final at Lord's.

Set just 137 to win, Warwickshire cruised to victory with 118 balls to spare for the loss of just two wickets.

Trott was a class above in a match dominated by the bowlers; he was the only batsman from either team to score more than 40 and the 10 boundaries he struck was more than Surrey managed (eight) in their whole innings.

Surrey had started steadily, advancing to 2-99, only to collapse dramatically and lose eight wickets for 37 runs in just 15 overs.

Three batsmen failed to score, including Bangladesh Test squad members Zafar Ansari and Gareth Batty, the latter having been handed an England recall on Friday after 11 years in the international wilderness.

"To lose in this manner is a little bit embarrassing," Batty said.

"We have not really turned up today. We just got it wrong and it hurts like hell."

South Africa-born Trott, who retired from international cricket in May 2015, settled the match with a cover drive off the bowling of Sam Curran.

"The bowlers did such a good job. We only had to chase so small (a total) and take our time to get ourselves in," Trott told Sky Sports.

"We said we would just play normally like we are chasing 230, 240 and have that mindset and it's always important when chasing those totals to be positive.

"It's always nice to win games of cricket and contribute. Big games here at Lord's are fantastic to be a part of and hopefully I have a few games left."

Warwickshire's Ian Bell, dismissed for just 17 in the run chase, told BBC radio: "Trotty was outstanding. If I could choose one person to knock off a total like that, it would be Jonathan Trott."

Chris Woakes was Warwickshire's stand-out bowler, but Oliver Hannon-Dalby - who took the big wicket of Kumar Sangakkara for 21 - and spinners Jeetan Patel and Ateeq Javid also took two wickets each.

It was a second successive One-Day Cup final loss for Surrey.
