Mumbai hold on in IPL Super Over

Mumbai lose five wickets in the final two overs but Jasprit Bumrah holds his nerve to win a Super Over against Gujarat

The score: Gujarat Lions 9-153 (Kishan 48, K Pandya 3-14) tied with Mumbai Indians 153 (Patel 70, Thampi 3-29). Mumbai (2-11) beat Gujarat (0-6) in the Super Over by five runs.

The Super Over: The match itself was exciting enough (see below), but the tension went up a level when scores were tied after 40 overs, forcing a Super Over. Kieron Pollard hit a four and a six in Mumbai's over but James Faulkner responded with two wickets to leave Gujarat needing 12 runs to win. And when Jasprit Bumrah opened with a no-ball, a leg bye off the free-hit and then a wide, it looked like the pressure might get to the young quick against Lions batsmen Aaron Finch and Brendon McCullum. But the 23-year-old bounced back with a series of superb yorkers and slower balls, as just three runs – one of them a fumbled bye from ‘keeper Parthiv Patel – came off final five deliveries to see Mumbai seal a memorable win.

The finish: The excitement of the Super Over came after a thrilling end to Mumbai's run chase, when five wickets fell in a chaotic final two overs. Gujarat's Basil Thampi did brilliantly to concede just four runs from the penultimate over, including two wickets and then a brilliant direct hit from the boundary from Irfan Pathan that made it three wickets in the over. Needing 11 runs to win from six balls with two wickets in hand, Mumbai were on track when Krunal Pandya launched a six from the first ball before a single made the equation four needed from four. But a direct hit from Ravi Jadeja sent Bumrah on his way before Pathan did well to concede just a two and a single, leaving scores level with one delivery remaining and just one wicket in hand. It was Jadeja again who was the hero for Gujarat, with another direct hit from point finding Pandya inches short of his ground as he attempted a match-winning single, setting off wild celebrations and sending the match into a one-over eliminator.

The injury: For the second time in this IPL, an Australian has suffered what appears to be a serious shoulder injury diving for a ball in the outfield. Andrew Tye's night was cut short when he landed awkwardly on his left shoulder when diving to stop a ball from going to the rope. The paceman immediately clutched his shoulder in agony and was attended to by the team's medical staff and Aussie coach Brad Hodge. He was eventually carried off the ground on a stretcher and his participation in the rest of the tournament looks to be in serious doubt.

The Aussie pack: There were mixed fortunes for Gujarat's Australian trio, especially fast bowler AJ Tye (see above). Tye had contributed a handy 25 from just 12 balls with the bat before his night was cut short, while Aaron Finch (0) and James Faulkner (21 from 27) couldn't lift Gujarat to a bigger total. Finch also couldn't get the better of Bumrah in the Super Over, while Faulkner contributed a brilliant run out and two crucial wickets in the field and then bagged two more scalps to cut Mumbai short in the Super Over.

The fallout: Gujarat missed a golden chance to keep pace with the top four and remain on six points, just two points from the bottom, ahead of their trip to Pune on Monday. Mumbai’s tense win continues their bright season and they are now level on points at the top of the table with Kolkata ahead of their match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday.
