Young leftie posts 108 to see Hobart Hurricanes Academy defeat PSL outfit Lahore Qalandars in second match of Quadrangular T20 series
Jewell's glittering ton fires 'Canes to victory
The Hobart Hurricanes Academy have prevailed in their opening match of the T20 Quadrangular series after young gun Caleb Jewell struck a sparkling century.
Jewell, a 20-year-old left-hander with three first-class games to his name, struck 108 as Hobart racked up 2-173 from their 20 overs at Blacktown International Sports Park.
It proved too many for the young Pakistan Super League outfit, with the Qalandars bowled out for 134 to hand the Hurricanes a 39-run win.
The series kicked off earlier this month with Sydney Thunder Academy defeating their cross-town rivals Sydney Sixers Academy by 16 runs
Hurricanes coach Darren McNees said the tournament is an excellent chance for more experienced players to get some match-practice in ahead of BBL|07, as well providing a good opportunity for some of Tasmania's best junior talent.
"It's pretty exciting. It's a great opportunity for some of our current Big Bash players to fine-tune some skills prior to BBL|07 and it's a chance for some of our young players to stretch and expand their game," he said.
"It's also a chance for someone to put themselves on the radar not so much for this season's squad, but for future seasons."
"We've identified that there's a bit of a gap between our Under 19 program and Shield cricket, and this Academy is about ensuring some of those players still get some of the services from our program even though they may not have a state contract," he said.
"So we give good grade cricketers some exposure to a higher level and we can also stretch some of our state Under 19 players as well."
