Record-breaking NZ crush India in first ODI

Centurion Tom Latham combined with Ross Taylor to lead New Zealand to a shock six-wicket win against India in the opening one-day international in Mumbai.

Latham struck an unbeaten 103 and Taylor 95 in a record-breaking 200-run stand as the Black Caps chased down India's 8-280, reaching 4-284 with an over to spare.

Captain Virat Kohli struck 121 - his 31st ODI century - for the hosts after electing to bat first and the total appeared a daunting one in hot, humid conditions.

New Zealand's sound start hit a speed bump when they lost openers Colin Munro (28) and Martin Guptill (32) and captain Kane Williamson (8) within the space of eight overs.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Latham, batting at No.5, joined Taylor at 3-80 and set about dismantling an Indian attack that had steered their No.1 ranked side to victory in nine of their past 10 ODIs against Sri Lanka and Australia.

The experienced pair used sweep shots and deft placements to frustrate the hosts and take control of the three-match series.

Latham, who faced 102 balls, struck eight fours and two sixes in his fourth ODI ton.

Taylor narrowly missed an 18th ODI century, dismissed with his side one short of victory, ending New Zealand's best fourth-wicket partnership against all nations.

Earlier, Black Caps pace pair Trent Boult and Tim Southee took seven scalps between them.

The outstanding Boult (4-35) swung the ball at speed and removed both openers cheaply, taking 2-7 from his opening spell of five overs.

Southee (3-73) proved expensive but returned to claim the crucial wicket of Kohli as he was accelerating.

The only other New Zealander to complete 10 overs was inexpensive spinner Mitchell Santner (1-41) as no other Indian batsman progressed past 40.

Willliamson says New Zealand's performance in their first ODI for four months was "brilliant".

"That's one of the best chases that I've seen, certainly in the time I've been a Black Cap," he said.

"The way we set the tone with the new ball at the start of the day was outstanding from our front two bowlers (Boult and Southee) and we struck at it well throughout that innings."

He was particularly impressed by former opener Latham, who thrived in the middle order after only a short rest following 50 overs with the gloves in sweltering conditions.

It was just New Zealand's eighth win in 33 ODIs in India and leaves them eyeing a series win heading into game two in Pune on Wednesday.
